v90 external modem recomendation

the short story. SMC Barricade with default dialup for a small network. Got a USR external v92 faxmodem and it's a piece of junk. Won't get me over 22k using the test at dslreports. A winmodem in a laptop I hooked up straight to the phone line was getting me 40+, the usr hooked up to the smae laptop got the same 22k. USR says it isn't their modem of course so I'm returning it. Less than $100, since anything over comes out of my pocket. And before anyone says why, it because it's out in the country and there is no cable, no dsl, but they have a need for a few pcs to all be able to get to their email. Thanks.
