V6 vs Inline 6

Exactly - Inline 6 is too long to work well with front wheel drive or AWD - that's why most cars have V6. Trouble with the V6 is that it's inherently unbalanced and vibrates unless you use balance shafts. The Nissan VQ engine is as smooth as most inline 6's, though.

And as for the six question, I'd take an inline over a V because to me, it feels alot smoother. My uncle has a 325i and dad has an A6 2.8. The 325i feels like it has a much smoother engine, but they have similar power. The bmw is a rear wheel drive compared to my dads fwd A6, however.
 
Inline designs are inheritly in stronger in design by having more mains. They also usually have a longer length of stroke, or at least can have a longer length of stroke than a V.

Give me a good inline over a V anyday.
 
For smoothness and power: I6 > H6 > VR6 > V6

For space constraints: VR6 > V6 > H6 > I6
 
V 6 for packaging and uses most of the tooling of the V8 production line.

My Dakota is a V6 doesn't intrude w/vibration.

I have strong affection for all in lines. If I could choose that would be it. Very easy to work on. The Ford 5.0 6 is one of the best, 12 port head too.

V6... more balance... most likely smoother.

although the I6 is capable of more power IIRC.

note: I only voted V6 cause I LOVE the VQ30DE engine 😀
 
Wow. I thought it was just me that preferred the i6 in my 76 280z to any v6 I've ever driven. heh

Big downside to i6's though: Milling the head is a biatch.

L28. Fantastic series of engines. So damn strong they made a decent diesel out of it.
