V5 & i850 Incompatibilities

I just tried two new i850 boards: The MSI 6339 ATX TH1 and Asus P4T. Both boards feature an AGP Pro slot. I was curious about the Pentium 4s gaming performance with a non-T&L board, so we decided to try the Voodoo 5500 AGP. But it was impossible to plug the Voodoo 5500 in the AGP Pro slot, because the necessary second notch was not there.

Look here for the Voodoo 5500 and compare for example with the ATI Radeon. You will see that the Voodoo5 has only one notch and has not the second notch between the golden pins, while most AGP videocards have two (three if you count the one behind the golden pins). It remains to be seen of course if all i850 boards will be equipped with an AGP Pro slot, but I do not understand why the Voodoo 5500 has only one notch.

Well if you look at the pins you'll see that every pin is used, though I can't get a close enough look with that picture to see if they're acually conneced to the PCB.

that makes no sense at all...i thought all AGP cards will fit into an AGP Pro slot. i have a CUSL2 w/ an AGP Pro slot, and i'm using a V5500. As far as i know, AGP Pro slots are a standardized hardware design. the AGP Pro slot cant be different than the one on my CUSL2. it would be nice if they showed a picture of the AGP Pro interface on the i850 in that link you provided, but unfortunately it only shows the two cards...

I have an AGP Pro slot on my A7V too with the 5500. The AGP slot on those new mobos have to be some new upcoming standard, or something. Perhaps 8x AGP will require that format?

there will be DDr chipsets coming out that support the P4.

Who the hell wants to buy a Rambust-based motherboard anyway?

blah.

avoid.

AMD will be my next purchase.

sandorski, thats what i figured after a while. at first i thought there must be a misunderstanding since i can run my v5500 on a CUSL2, which has an AGP Pro slot. but then after looking at some pictures, its obvious that the new standard changes the arrangement of slot dividers inside the slot interface and the voltage supplied to the card through the slot (1.5v as opposed to 3.3v)

...oh well, who plans on getting a Pentium 4 anytime soon anyway?

Yea this is Intel's fault for not supporting 3.3v cards, but some people over in GH were trying to put the blame on 3dfx because their card wasn't 1.5v....umm...that logic doesn't make sense to me.
