v4? Inline 4?

Do regular cars have V4's or are they inline 4 engines? Ive been corrected a few times both ways, so i dont know, any rule of thumb?

Inline 4. Anyone that tells you they have a V4 is just wrong. Unless it's one of the rare gem pieces from the 70's..developed by Volvo I think (?)

There are Inline 6's and V6's though..majority are V6's, save for a few.

You're thinking of the VR4, which means 4 wheel drive. That car has a 6 cylinder engine, I think inline but I'm not sure.

Leave it to backwards-@ss Saab to do that😉 BTW, the only V4 Saab I've seen is in a junkyard😉

Not to mention the whole ignition-key-on-the-floor thing 😕

closest thing I've seen to a V4 is a boxster.. 180 degree 'V' 😉

Boxsters have 6 cyl engines.

eh? boxster just means horiz. opposed (AKA 'flat'), doesn't denote the amount of cyl's.

That's what I thought too - most if not all Subaru's have a 4-cylinder boxster engine instead of an inline 4. Not talking about a specific car, but engine type.

That actually has an advantage. Its harder to break it out and hot-wire as its mounted more solidly in the center console.

Let's clarify this:

Boxer: flat, opposed-type engine.
Boxster: a car that Porsche currently builds, that has a 'boxer' engine.

😉

The advantage was actually that it also locked the shift linkage 😉

Call it a "flat" 4 and be done with it 😀
I've noticed it's fairly common for people to list I-6 BMWs as V6s... that's an insult to BMW enthusiasts everywhere! heh 😉

Here I am feeling pretty good about myself because I was thinking that I had educated the populace of OT on automobiles, then this thread pops up and puts me into a mad depression.

HAHAHAHA!!!

It's OK Roger. I know that my Saturn has an inline 4, the Reliant had an inline 4, my Dakota has a V6, and my Duster had an inline 6 (Slant 6 woohoo!)
