I bought this Lucent 56K modem, most intrigued by its V.92 features of Modem on Hold and quickconnect.

Two questions...
My old modem used to connect to my regular (nonAOL) connection at 48-56K, this one connects at 28.8 every time.
My new modem connects to one of AOL's lines at 48K or so.

Why doesnt it connect at a higher rate to my home connection?

How do I take advantage of all the new features?

Thx

Check for both a driver update and a firmware upgrade. Also, try updating Windows at MS's site. If neither of those items work, fool around with options in the control panel. Also, try re-installing the software you use to connect to your main ISP, unless of course that software is dial-up networking.

Try the drivers off of Lucent's website. They should be there somewhere, although I can't find them right now. I think the latest version is 8.22.

Check if your ISP supports V92..
Your ISP must have the equipment to support V92, the modem alone will not give it to you..

I'd do an online bandwith test.

Using the 'connected at...' which dialup networking quotes as an indication of available bandwith is a waste of time.

How many times have you seen Win9x boxes say they're connected @ 115200?

Try and see what speed you're actually capable of achieving before you start worrying about firmware updates and the like.

If the ISP doesn't support v.92, do you have to disable v.92? I was told you do.

If the ISP doesn't support V.92, it should at least be falling back to V.90.
