How does one become qualified to become a "User Experience" designer? I see these job openings more and more. Is it something you get a degree in or something a you just kind of migrate into? i.e. get a software engineering degree

Anyone here work as one? Seems like it would be an interesting job
 
I've worked with a few, and have varying opinions as to their levels of competence and usefulness.

I suspect that the official road into that job is some sort of design-oriented program at a university, but heck I really don't know.

I do suspect, though, that whatever the program is it doesn't include any classes on how software actually works.
 
Yeah, I think Steve Jobs was one on steroids. "I don't care if the software wasn't designed that way, make it happen!" (paraphrasing)

It seems it would be useful to have a broad imagination, and being able to predict just what the user will want.
 
Usability Engineer/Information Architect/Human Computer Interaction(HCI)/etc. User Experience Designer is just a stupid way of saying all those things. Usually, this means a degree in a behavioural science with programming knowledge/experience/training. However, i once worked with a librarian who became an information architect, so there is a lot of overlap. Essentially, its GUI design, page flow, wire frames, etc.
