I've never watched a Uwe Boll movie before, given his terrible reputation. Rampage was continually showing up on netflix as a "movie you would like based on your enjoyment of movie x". It sounded interesting enough, the only real turn off was the director, and many of the netflix reviews said it was his best work ever by far. Given all that, I decided to give it a shot.
It starts slow, but not too slow. Laying the groundwork, giving you good view into why the main character is who he is. Excellent acting from Brendan Fletcher (as "Bill"), who I hadn't ever heard of before watching Rampage. The whole cast really were unknown as far as I'm concerned, but they do a good job overall.
After the slow start, there is the "rampage" the movie is named for. Yet it's not all brainless killing, it's actually paced well in brief moments of gunfire inter-spaced with Bill's plan slowly coming together. It's violent, sure, but not any worse than an average action movie and certainly more tame than a recent "Saw" movie. It's more about who and why he kills rather than the killing itself that is troublesome.
All in all, 4/5 stars from me. Not one of my top 10 films but better than typical Hollywood crap. Based on past descriptions of Boll's work this must be leagues better than anything he has ever done. I'm actually curious what he does next, although I'll probably steer clear if it's a video game franchise.
