utterly embarrasing question

I am on firefox and for some reason when I do the restore default on the search engine list, it sets me to amazon.UK.

I do have british english dictionary installed, but the default code page is set to EN-US.

Follow these easy steps:

Change Default Search in Firefox

Change Your Default SearchTired of having Google as the default search engine in Firefox? Maybe it is another search engine?s turn to be on top?! If you feel the urge to dethrone Google as the default search engine for your Firefox search box - this is how you can get it done:

In your address bar, type in: ?about:config?

Inside of the filter search box, type in:

browser.search.defaultenginename

Double click that entry (or right click and choose ?Modify?) and then type in the name of the search engine you wish to have as the default search engine. It must be one that you already have installed and also make sure you type in the name correctly.

Now if you type in ?Yahoo?, restart Firefox and when your browser comes back up you will see the red Yahoo ?Y? and Yahoo as your default search engine.

my default is google though.

and there is no defaultenginename... I am talking about the search bar that is basically top right corner, which a bunch of search engine listed in a drop down.

when I restore the default, it adds amazon.uk instead of amazon.com

OK ... Just click on the drop down arrow and you will see a manage search option. If need be, you can Add Amazon.com to the list and then just select it.

I thought I could , but it wants me to search for search engines... and I don't think I ever found the amazon.com one.

I know this sounds really stupid 🙂

You probably have to edit the Amazon search engine plugin.
The file is usually located at C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\searchplugins\amazondotcom.xml.
You can open the file with any text editor.
Find where it say "template = http://www.amazon.com.uk/..." or something similar.
And change it to:
template="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/external-search/"

Here is what my amazondotcom.xml looks like:

huh, interesting, I don't have an amazondotcom one, instead there is an amazon-en-GB.xml

all signs points to the browser thinking I am in UK... a whole bunch of them are en-GB


I am just going to copy the content of that folder from another machine
