It appears there's a spot for both a 120 mm exhast fan in the back and a 80 mm intake fan in the front. Does anyone have a effective hardware suggestion? I'm using an ABIT NF-M2 matx motherboard that supports 3 fans.

Not sure I understand your question. Are you looking for a fan reccomendation? Yate Loons are very good. For the front 80mm fan I'd suggest going with something as quiet as possible since smaller fans can be noisey. What case do you have?
 
Sorry, my info was vague. I'm building a relatively inexpensive rig and picked up this case, Ulta Wizard Mid-Tower ATX Case:

I've never installed cooling fans in my previous build and now want to make sure everthing stays cool.

Motherboard: ABIT NF-M2 nView:

AMD X2 4200+:
null

Patriot memory 1gb (2x512):
null

ATI X1950PRO 256MB :
null

So my question is what case fans should I look at? Is it as simple as just picking a 120mm exhaust fan and a 80mm intake fan? 😕


 
I suggest an 80MM intake fan in the front and a 120MM exhaust in the rear.

Right?

have you ever performed a case mod before? id suggest blowing out the front intake to a 120mm if possible. If not, put double sided mounting take right behind your HD's instead of a 80mm fan. That would be a better solution.

The case doesnt look so bad from a inside view, a lot of work can be done on it to increase its performance. I however prefer the chieftec brand, as they are nearly identical.

If you need to cut steel, and want to do it cheap, get a nibbler at radio shack. Its like 12.99 but it will make nice nibble cuts on almost any case.

Also if your going to use a tower HSF, or a Big Typhoon type, get rid of the side air duct. Its worthless. and on the BT it wont fit with it on.
 
Yeah, it's pretty obvious this would be my first case mod. I'd like to give it a shot. Thanks for the suggestions.

OK, lets see if I can get this straight.

Go with with Big Typhoon tower heat sink fan for the CPU and remove side air duct: check!

Replace 80 MM intake fan with a 120 MM fan: check!
But doing so would require cutting the case for fit?
Other option would be a double sided mounting take behind hard drive's? Is there an example somewhere I could check out?

Last resort? Get a better case and learn nothing. 😀 :roll:
 
rofl rofl.... Nah get a cheap case and hack it up, Have fun with it, and if u mess it up, just tos it.

Cheap case meaning something thats fairly cheap, less then 30 dollars.


Double sided mount tape mount is simple...


lemme see if i can diagram it for ya..



(120mm fan bottom double sided taped)/(cable wires for hard drives)/(hard drive cage)

U just want to mount the fan right behind the hard drives with tape to suck air from the hard drives and throw it to the back where your 120mm exhaust fan is. This will increase the flow of air from the front of your case to the rear, and would also lower the ambient temps.

Be creative in how you want to mount it. You can use mounting tape and also mount the fan on the case motherboard mounting backplate. Just try to minimize the dead spots in your case and you should be fine.
 
I have that case. I use 1x 80mm in the front, 1x 120mm out back, and pull that stupid ass funnel out and you can put another 80mm on the side.

not if you use a Big Typhoon. U need to leave it empty as it will interfer with anything on the side. Unless u use a full tower.
 
Good stuff! :thumbsup: Thanks for all of the suggestions. They case was "$free-ninety-five" with rebate, so good to go there.

The front grill on this case is located on the bottom. Assuming I go the 120mm taped fan route, how much more effective would this route be versus mounting the 80mm in it's designated area?
 
If you have room the 120 in the front would be better...
What I used to secure the 120 in the front of one of my cases was zipties they work real well!!
 
I don't understand why this is so complicated. I have this case and I just install a 80 mm in front ($1.99) and a 120 mm in the back ($2.50??) and then install a compusa fan controller ($6.00) to throttle the fan speed down. I have sunbeam cooler ($18) and I can place another 80 mm intake fan on the size duct (not necessary - almost does nothing for the case temperature). The thing is very cool. My system temp never goes above 32C.

32c isn`t considered cool....
32c -- 89.9 f.........especially when the ambient temp outside your case is much less.....
Unless you keep your home at 80+ degrees..

I've seen some instances where the temps go up. Seems to defy physics, but I've seen it.

Sometimes I just see the plexi crack from prolonged vibration from the fan (if you have the version w/ the window in the side panel.)

I just use the duct pulled all of the way down to the CPU fan so it can suck in cold air unless I'm using something tall. Then I just take it off and leave it with just the grill.

Some of us have a thermostat nazi for a spouse. 80F here. And that's our comprimise. 😀
