UT3 -- which brand will be better -- ATI or nVidia?

According to video card benchmarking charts, certain games tend to run better on one brand's GPUs than the other. For example, ATI cards might mop the floor with the nVidia cards in Oblivion while nVidia's cards crush ATI's cards in Battlefield 2142.

Will UT3 run better on ATI or nVidia cards?

This is a very important issue for people who are considering new video cards. Hopefully some of the major enthusiasts sites will do benchmarking on both the demo and the full game.

ATI looks better at this point, but I'll reserve judgement until the game comes out. There are rumours of new Nvidia (and ATI) GPUs on the horizon.

Really if you're buying a graphics card for a certain game, you're always better off waiting until it's released to see how it runs. :light:

As if peoply purchasing a new videocard will only play UT3 ? You could look up some games that run on unreal engines and see how ati/nvidia cards perform, but that's still not really futureproof.

ATI mops the floor with Oblivion? Really? From the THG vga charts the 2900XT is like 1fps faster than the 8800 GTS (both 320mb and 640mb).

In the last generation, the X19xx series totally killed the 7xxx. It could also do AA+HDR and maintain decent FPS.

The author didn't say anything about last generation or this generation. He said from video benchmarking charts. If the last time he looked was two years ago I think someone would have pointed that out.

So far Nvidia's 8800-cards have been much better in DX10-games compared to AMD's 2900-cards. In DX9 it can be very different story

I agree with Rusin.

You could probably see same kind of results when you play bioshock and Medal of Honor:Airborne. It's built around the same engine.

Yup. Look at current crop of games like bioshock with x19xx and compare to 7xxx series. Radeo wipes the floor and was better suited for the future.

Drivers, Drivers, and Drivers.

Most devs use 8800 cards as their testbed and do not even touch ATi hardware. ATI needs to write specific code to the drivers.

We will see.

Guess I'll just have to wait for UT3 benchmarks to come out. Sure hope there's a new next generation card that's more powerful than the x1950xt in the $150-200 range (2950 Pro, please).

"...the way it's meant to be played"

I have read that they tried to design it so that it would run well on the 7800 GT, which is merely a lower to mid-range card at this point.

If I had to pick now I'd go nVidia simply because you're more likely get AA in the game.

UT3 is "supposed" to scale very nicely for lower powered cards. I'd say you'd be fine with either ATI or Nvidia. What the minimum card is from each camp is to allow enjoyable UT3 gameplay remains to be seen of course.

Best course of action, as others have said, is to wait for the retail game to be benchmarked. Then make your buying decision based on that and what you can live with.
