What speed CPU do I need to maintain a minimum of 40 fps in high player assault/onslaught modes? Right now with a barton@2.2 ghz it goes into the 30s frequently and sometimes even into the 20s.

cheers

Your CPU is fine. You either need a faster video card or to turn down the game's resolution and/or quality settings.

I have an A64 3000+, 1 GB RAM, and a 9800P and I get around 70 fps with 8x AA, 16x AF at 1024x768.

gotta be your RAM then. get 1GB

It can't be his ram, 1GB won't get your extra 30 frames!.. If ram was the reason, everybody would buy 1gb and get higher FPS... I'm sure he has AA/AF turned on.. or he is running it on a higher reso.. check your Video card Options m8..

At least a 9700 Pro or 5900 GeForce video card will keep you above 60FPS.

Could you provide a full system hardware list?

i've been running 16bit color in my games so i can get close to 100fps :) (in the original UT atleast)
seems to do the trick
1024x768 seems to be a good resolution, anything higher just hacks off the fps by the dozen with my fx5200
ut2k3/4 is a tad more demanding and most new demos are slide shows hehe

sure it could he may only have like 256-512M and have some swapping going on. with that CPU and card he should be doing just fine.

I have:

1 GB pc2700 in 256x2,512 sticks
Processor above
Video Card above
Biostar MVCND Pro mobo
19" HP 930 monitor

I don't know what the problem is. I try running 1600x1200 with 2x AA/8x AF, and it runs at this speed. Even if I lower the resolution to 1024 I have the same problem.

This is only in Assualt and some Onslaught maps. On deathmatch I get a constant 60+ fps.

For some reason, I don't believe you. Can't think why.

With my OC'ed KT266a at "Holy Sh*t" level of details and nVidia 61.11 drivers, I rarely fall below 30 FPS at any time, even though I run an OC'ed Ti-4200 128mb.

The first thing to do is to upgrade all system drivers to current, and install the UT2004 patch. Next, make double sure that your audio drivers are current, especially if you run an Audigy/Audigy2. Audigy cards do not like to share IRQ if cit can be avoided and prefer a "real" IRQ rather than a "virtual" one if at all possible.

Tight timings for Max FPS in UT2004. Don't beleive THG about RAM timing and gaming. Most all the hardcore OC'ers/gamers on the UT2003/2004 website swear by tight timings and high FSB for max FPS in this game

The UT2004 .ini tweaks are minimally effective so are last priority. Stencil buffer enabling helps with many setups, as does side-band and/or Fast Writes enabling.

Lastly, check your system console for swapping. If this is happening, you will kill your FPS, regardless of your setup.

Turn off Caching of charachter models and search the groups for other tweeks in UT2k4. Also make sure there are no background processes sucking up your CPU cycles.

If that doesnt do it then it may be time to upgrade the video card and system ram. The cpu your using should be fine.

Swapping, is where you run out of system resources, and are forced to swap data to and from the HDD. The transfer rate of a HDD is far far slower than your RAM, so the system takes longer to move the data around according to it's needs. It swaps this information back and forth as needed as long as the RAM calls exceed the available system RAM. The transfer rate is SLOW (compared to RAM). This will cause mini-pauses, short freezes, and lagging/pumping during the game, as the data is moved to and from the HDD as needed.

Some ways to prevent this is to either add RAM, or free up RAM by closing non-essential services and programs, while running the game. Both work well in UT2004. It's often a hassle to close everything that isn't necessary to run the computer, so many people just buy the extra RAM.

well if u got everything set to Holy SH!t levels and are using AA and AF as well then that might be bringin ur FPS down.......i have a 2.4ghz P4 400fsb 768 RDRAM and a 9500pro.....set most things to high at 1024x768...no aa or af and on onslaugh i get average 35-50fps most times.....it does go down to sub 20's when theres just too many people in a game or when WW2 is happening infront of me all at once....your system should be fine!!!! tho i would have faster ram than 2700......3200 (DDR 400) is a better choice

could be lots of issues. do you have truform enabled?
I think your sys specs are fine although a field with 32 players is going to take any system down to
20 fps levels. your just going to have to moderate your quality settings with the number of players in a game to meet your standard.

why not? I have an AthlonXP @ 3200+, 1 GB RAM, and a 9800p and I get around 30 FPS with 8xAA, 16x AF @ 1600x1200, HOLY SH!T mode.

For all you know he could be running all details on Low.
