I was talking to one of my buddies about the fps cap for online play being set to 85. He didn't agree and showed me a screen he took showing 235fps on one of the maps he played. I checked again and still I'm at 85fps. After thinking about it awhile we thought it may be because of his sli rig. So he turns off sli, goes online and sure enough 85fps lock.

So the question I'm asking is why does the sli make a difference? Is he playing at 200fps, or 85fps?

Unless he has a CRT and is running at a refresh of 235 Hz (extremely unlikely) half of those frames aren't actually being displayed.

If he has an LCD he's really only getting 60-80 FPS.

It's because of vsync. You and he both have vsync on, and apparently when he turns on sli vsync is disabled for whatever reason.

It's not so much a framerate issue per say. It's just the curious behavior of the fps counter that's being questioned. He's happy with his fps whatever it is.

Edit for the poster above. Neither of us uses vsync. looking at the same portion of a map, I get 85fps online, 390fps offline (I have a BFG 6800oc AGP). UT caps online framerates, but with sli the frames don't appear to be capped.

Ya I'm at a constant 85....Hmmmm I thought you had to enable vsync, is it automatically enabled in UT?

my guess would be because with sli, only half of the screen is being drawn by each card....vsync could probably play some havok with sli if it were enabled.......the answer is most definately vsync thou.....without a doubt
