UT2k4 Not Smooth! Which part of the system is doing it?

Well I'm having some UT2k4 problems. My system is as follows:

IT7-MAX2 v2
2.53GHz @ 2.9GHz
1GB Corsair PC3200 XL 2-2-2-5 @ 390MHz (Reported by CPU-Z)
BBA 9800Pro
2x WD 80GB RAID 0

Before I put in the gig of ram, UT2k4 used to be low FPS and studdery at 1024x768.

Now it's just low FPS even without AA and AF I'm getting around 30fps average but it goes below that when there's a lot of action. My video card is overclocked a tad also.

Timings on the 9800pro are
Core: 412
Mem: 742

It's the 256bit R350 with 128mb DDR as recorded by RivaTuner.

I can't seem to figure out why the low FPS are. My friend's laptop's a 3.0G, 1GB RAM, 9700-M and it runs smooth as day.

Would not having SP2 for XP be a problem? Maybe I should update my drivers for vid card?

Not having SP2 shouldn't make a difference, but having outdated video drivers certainly will. I'd recommend the latest Omega drivers -- they include the newest features like AI, but without having to use .NET and the bloated Catalyst Control Center. Or, if you don't like using non-standard drivers, then get the latest Catalysts from ATI. Either way, you need to keep all your drivers up-to-date.

You should also check your motherboard manufacturer's site to see if there are updated chipset drivers. If so, install those BEFORE upgrading your video card drivers.

Are you having these problems with other games as well, or only UT2K4? What about benchmarks like 3DMark -- are your scores in the right range for your hardware?

Weird. Try running UT2k4 with your 9800 Pro at stock speeds, the Unreal engine has always been sensitive to overclocks. Also, check your cpu temps, maybe your P4 is going into it's overheating mode thus slowing down.

I'll run 3dMark in a little bit (gotta download it). I started up Doom 3 and was getting some artifacts (I knew the speeds were a little high without any additional cooling). I did a tiny overclock on it now and D3 runs better. I DO have some Catalyst drivers on and I'll check for any additional chipset drivers. I had some problem with the SM Bus Controller not having a driver but i went to intel and downloaded that so that got fixed today.

I KNOW my CPU isn't going into throttle back becasue i have the warning temp at 71C and shutdown at 75C. And SpeedFan reports a 40-42 idle and 50 or so load so I'm good there.

woof ok. I thought that was bad. It must be something in UT2k4 then. It seems to only happen in Onslaught too beacsue I was in a CTF Instagib and a small level and I was running 75+ the whole time.
