UT2004 -> UT2007 cheapest video card that will do the job?

Circumstances has placed me in the situation where I don't currently have a working gaming video card - my Gigabyte X800 bit the dust.

As such I can't satisfy my addicted need for UT2004. I was gonna wait until UT2007 was released and tested to make my upgrade decisions but I find I must make that choice now.
Does anyone have any idea if the 7900GT will fit the bill?

I only have a 17" LCD with the standard 1280x1024 pixel design. I was thinking of maybe trying out a 1600x1200 LCD and seeing if my JOY factor jumps. I have no ideo if the 7900GT will do 2007 at a high res. but I suspect the 7900GT would be the most expensive computer part I've ever bought.

I understand that probably nobody has any idea what demands UT2007 will place on a video card but I'm asking anyway just in case info has leaked about the new UT engine.

Well, I heard during an interview that the 6800 Ultra can run UT2007 at max but don`t know the resolution. So, the 6800 GS is a good bargain card that`s not too far away from it.
On the ATI side, I`d lean minimum towards the X1600 XT since it has AVIVO and shader model 3 (the 6800 GS has Purevideo and SM3 as well).

EDIT: Make sure you get the most powerful CPU you can afford. UT2004 needs it. I got a 3700+.

I doubt that the 7900gt will play UT2007 at 1600x1200 unless you turn everything to low. High settings, 1024x768 for full settings most likely, unless it's coded as well as HL2.

Yeah, you'll have to wait a while before we have any idea how good UT2K7 will run. Its not even due to be out until what Novemeber or something? By then we'll be seeing the next video cards and you could find a better card for the price.

So, if you're wanting to play UT2K4 now, a nice inexpensive card can run it reasonably well, and then you could save up for something better later on, when you know what card to look for to play that game.

But a 7900GT will OC to 560/1600 easily, it should be good enough for full or medium settings at 1280x1024 depending on your preferences on what is "playable"

edit: buy a cheap eVGA card and step-up in three months, they might have benchmarks by then.

Don't bother, since it's not out yet, and when it is we are likely to have new graphics cards.

I am pretty sure that an X1900XTX and a 7900GTX level card will play the game at maximum settings at 1600x1200 with no aa or af. Epic is known for their extremely efficient and well running games. This is not some poor little company that makes a game look moderately good at the cost of extreme performance(cough Monolith/Fear cough).

I would say that a Radeon 9700 Pro level card could probably run the game at 1024x768 at low to medium low settings with no aa or af with moderate frame rates.

7900GT/X1800XT will work well.

I'd maybe go 7900GT in SLI mobo so one can add a second one for playing at maxed or close to maxed settings for 2k7, depending on what resolution you play at.

I was reading in an interview with CliffyB sometime ago and I think I recall him saying that the minumum GPU would probably be around a 6600 GT. Keep in mind that's probably the BARE minimum.
