UT2004, my mouse... What the crap, halp!

I have a UT problem:

I built a new computer. It's pretty cool.

HARDWARE:
AMD A64 3500+ @ 2200mhz
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum (nForce3)
Gainward GeForce 6800GT 256bit, 256mb (gpu: 400mhz, mem: 1100mhz)
2x256mb (meh) DDR400
Audigy 2

PERIPHERALS:
Logitech z680s 5.1 500watt soundsystem
Logitech MX500
$7 keyboard (I love the cheap ones)

...I figured I better just get that out there before anyone asks...

Anywho, when I'm playing UT (and I've only noticed it in UT, though I suppose it's possibly happening in other games, UT gets the biggest workout as far as mouse-movement goes), occasionally my mouse will cease altogether. I'll be in the middle of twitching to lightning-gun a guy, and my twitch will stop mid-swing and not move when I slide my mouse. Button clicks do nothing (though if I was holding down a button when it stopped working, it'll keep at it)... Then suddenly it works again.

It seems to be totally random, sometimes it happens a lot, sometimes just a couple times... sometimes the spouts are a second in length, sometimes it'll take a solid 5 seconds to regain control.

This is a big problem. I'm going to a UT competition tomorrow, if it's my mouse, I'm going to have a REALLY hard time, if it's my system, I'll be okay (we have to use the LAN center's comps), but I'll be pissed... anyway...

I've done some research. Some people had a similiar problem and fixed it by deleting the bot-speech-recognition (SpeedRedist or whatever). Didn't help me.

Some people found it to be H/W Sound + EAX. I turned it to a lower setting, didn't help.

Some people found it to be H/W Sound period. I turned IT down, didn't help.

Now let me say, during the longer of the fits my mouse has, I can actually hear the sound WinXP makes when you disconnect and connect a USB device. This bothers me.

I would just buy a new mouse, but I'm afraid that it's not necessarily the mouse, but maybe a hardware/software problem. I'm rather poor too.

If anyone has any ideas, give me a heads up... else, paypal money to me so I can buy a new mouse.

Thanks for reading guys!

I've tried different USB ports, yes.

No, I haven't tried an adapter. Good idea, give me a few mins, I'll be back with a response.

Okay, I used my little USB-to-PS2 adapter... rebooted, and it still happens...

This means that it is, without a doubt, my mouse, correct? I want to have a second (third, and fourth) opinion on this.

The thing that bothers me is that I've only noticed it in UT... maybe my mouse is getting old and has a hard time with those faster movements? I've been using it for 3+ years now... is it possible it only has trouble with the quicker motions?

Which mouse do you have? In my experience, I had an older Microsoft Intellimouse, that would lose track if i move it too fast. Maybe it is just built on older optical technology or it is starting to give away and wear out. I would try out a different mouse for the meantime, play a few rounds and see what happens. My guess is that it is the mouse.

Try updating the mouse drivers? it might help, its a far shot though, its worth a try
