Yeah, so I have this pretty new computer here, and I havn't really used it to its capabilities in terms of graphics (I usually play Freelancer, RoN, HW2 and sometimes some BF:V). Yeah, so I ran out and bought the DVD version of UT2004 for $40 bucks, came home, popped it in the drive, installed it, no problems.

Yup, then I try to run it. Yeah, and then this popped up halfway through the splashscreen:

"Runtime Error!

Program: F:\UT2004\System\UT2004.exe

This application has requested the Runtim to terminate itin an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

OK"

Here's a screenie

The thing that's strange is, every other game, new or old, that I have tried to run on this exact setup has run flawlessly, except now. Specs:

AMD 64 3200+ 2.0GHz@2.0GHz
1024MB Corsair 2-2-2
RADEON 9800XT {CATALYST 6.14.10.6451(?) 5/15/04 Rev, not sure, will update to most recent}
WinXP SP1

Oh yes, I have patched to the latest version (3236). I tried running on the original DVD-unpatched EXE, put the program simply dumps to windows after a few seconds of splashscreen. Sorry if me making this post (and thus not editing) annoys you. My browser is refusing to cooperate at this moment.

EDIT: Ah, yes, the Edit button is once again cooperating.

I have Googled a bit, but there have been no real answers (Replies along the lines of "Oh really?... Umm... UT is a pretty cool game").

I'll try reinstalling again.

Why don't you "contact the application's support team"? It may be an unknown bug that you can help them squash.

Hmm, have you contacted support ? Sometimes they don't tell people everything on their site.

Hey, what windows skin is that ?

amdfanboy, BingBongWongFooey:

Yeah, I should call Tech Support. But it's late... I'll call tomorrow...err... later today. In the meanwhile, if you have any clues, please, feel free to share them with me.

Honestly: I got this game for the mods, not the game itself. That Alien Swarm mod is the 'Alien'-themed shooter that I've always wanted to play, but never really did (I never liked the AvP series, since I never had a powerful enough comp to run them back then. Now that I do, they're two years old and look terrible).

Some more facts that you don't really care about: Remember when Starcraft came out in 1998? Hot damn, I rushed to Best Buy and nabbed that sucker for a whole $59 (it came with a manual and a big box, and everything!). Yup, and to my disgust, it could not function properly on my Pentium 150 at 640x480 with a Trident 1MB video card. I could not pinpoint the problem, as I was an idiot back then (and still pretty much is one right now) so, you know what I did? Whenever I felt like SC (which was pretty much always at that time), I'd make maps with the Map Editor (since that worked). Of course, having not played the game and no clue of the entire blue-box trigger system, none of my maps worked.

I still remember the expression of a friend of mine: "You have Starcraft? The REAL Starcraft? With Battle.net and all!?"

Well, OK, stupid story. I should've picked up that copy of Joint Operations instead.

EDIT: "Update your video and sound drivers." C'mon, you don't want to comment on my stories? Eh?

I only saw this error when trying to install a mod for UT2K4. Solution was to reinstall, repatch. No problems.
