UT2003 with a GF3 - Hey, my card doesn't suck so bad after all! *EDITED*

*EDIT 19 Sep/1802 hours*

I finally got around to benchmarking my rig:

1800XP @ 1.53GHz
GF3 (220/500) with 29.42 drivers
512mb Micron PC2100

1024 x 768
Flyby: 106
Bots: 50

1600x1200
Flyby: 51
Bots: 33

Not as bad as I thought. I must admit though, when actually playing the game, (1024x768) my FPS drop to around 30 from time to time...gets choppy. I guess I don't NEED a new videocard....but I do NEED a new videocard. 😉 I happen to like my 80FPS, thank you very much. 😛 😉

Mine sucks. 😛 I'm TRYING to play at 1024 x 768 x 32 with all details cranked to max, but NO AA. It's pretty choppy, especially during close-up fighting. 🙁

I have gotten SO used to having everything maxed-out. I play MoHAA at 1152 x 864 x 32 w/all details maxed and 2x AA and it's smooth as buttah.

What should I lower on UT2003 to obtain playable framerates? Going down to 800 x 600 is not an option...after all, I don't have a Voodoo 3, fer Chrissakes! 😉 I could go to 16-bit color...or lower the details.

Or i could just buy a GF4 4600...but I'm waiting for NVidias next card...Christmas time, right?

My venerable GF3 has met it's match. 🙁

Using the benchmark, I got these results.

Rig
1.9GHZ (10.5x181) AthlonXP
256MB Kingmax DDR400
Epox 8K5A2 @181 FSB. Turbo Timings, but CAS2.5
GF3Ti200 @ 225/530 w/ 40.41s (I hear these are buggy with UT2k3

Resolution - 1024x768x32
Details - Highest on all (allowed in demo)

Flyby - 103.2fps
Botmatch - 52.7fps
All while running SETI@Home, playing winamp, 2 IRCs, a few IEs up, and a rig uptime of 3 days...

While playing, on the out door map forest like map, I was recieving a low of 30 FPS, average of 50. Either way, still playable for me. I didn't play it too much, so I'm unsure how my framerates were on the other maps. Though, from other's benchmarks, those with the same speed botmatch score as I, seem to have a way higher score in flyby.

But if you want to benchmark, and share your results, go to the UT2k3 Folder, Then System, and run the benchmark.exe, choose was resolution, then it'll give the results after a series of 6 or so benchmarks.

You can also type in your console "fps stats", or "stats fps" (i forgot which, but its one of those two).

I'd like to see what you've got.

gf3 200/525 and athlon 1540/141 and 512 DDR

its not choppy if i'm on a fast server at 1024x768 and "highest" settings. ping seems to be a huge factor in this game.

My GF3 Ti200 gets raped by UT2K3
it's playable. but there is no frame comfort buffer with this game... the FPS is very low and is almost to the point where it's choppy..

it's a Ti200 overclocked to between GF3 and Ti500 speeds and it's definitely not fast enough for this game. sad.

I haven't tried overclocking my card with UT2003, but I have overclocked it in the past. My GF3 isn't much of an overclocker. I don't remember the exact numbers I got, but even though it made a 2,000-point 3DMark diff, I didn't see or feel any difference in actual games...unless of course, the damn card locked up. 🙁

I'd hate to spend $250 on a videocard now, only to have same videocard be $200 come December or whenever the NV30 comes out. <---been there, done that...paid $350 for my GF3!

athlon 1.4
512mb
gf3 ti200 @240/500

1024x768max
106fps
35fps

when i take out one stick of ram the game seems choppy

wasnt the UT very cpu dependent
and if so i would anticipate this to be the major factor and possibly u may want a better cpu and if not at least people should be noting what cpu they are running

Ditto, I'm not doing that again! I was gonna look into ATI's card but now I think I'll upgrade my processor, memory, and mobo then wait on the video until the NV30 comes out.

Flyby 98.87
Bots 57.06

P4 2.4(B)
ASUS P4T533-C
GeForce 3 (ASUS v8200 Deluxe)

I'm playing the game at 1280 x 1024 with AFAIK everything cranked to max and the gameplay is smooooth... 😉

[edit]

That was at 1024 x 768

Windows XP SP1
Pentium 4 1.6a @ 2.4
Original GeForce 3 @ 250 core 520 memory.
Epox 4g4a motherboard @ 150 (600 effective) fsb
512 megs Kingmax PC400 DDR ram @ 374 Cas 2.5 turbo timings
Hercules Game Theatre XP (latest drivers)
All options details and sounds maxed and 1024x768x32

Flyby - 110.263336 fps
Botmatch - 60.629368fps

All while running AVG antivirus in the background, MM5, 3 IE browsers open, Outlook open and Explorer open.

I've got a Geforce 2 and with the setting turned down, I'm finding it very playable. I've even running at 1024X768 and I don't think it looks that bad. Not the full glory I would expect from a Radeon 9700, but definetly worth playing even without all the eye candy turned on.

You might also try the tips listed here.

The benchmark runs without sound, for instance, so changing your sound settings could make a big difference.

Viper GTS

When I benchmark my system with a Geforce 4ti 4200 128MB I get slower scores than you what gives?

1024x768

Flyby=106
Botmatch=31

i don't know how i am getting such smooth game play on a geforce 3 ti-200 (128MB). i am overclocking the card to 225/490 and the processor is a p4 1.6a overclocked to 2.3 GHz. i am playing at 1280x1024 and unreal is smooth. i also have 512 MB of ram and performed the ram tweak where i created a separate partition for the pagefile [512 MB x 2 =1024 MB]. i know that produced better performance than before when i first played the game.

It seems like most people have trouble cracking the 40FPS barrier as the minimum amount in UT2K3. That is pretty obonoxious, because that is what I like to have as my minimum for optimal smoothness. Oh well, I guess I will have to live with 30-35FPS as a minimum. Also, I find $150-200 is a good amount to spend on a video card. One can still get some life out of it without spending an arm and a leg.

I've got the same setup with my geforce3 as well. There's a few settings you can max out (world geometry and something else) because they are more CPU dependent. The other stuff should be kept at medium. It does slow down a little bit though. I'm not upgrading till the NV30 no matter what.

MichaelD what happened to that GF4 4200 you ordered?

Are you guys benching the demo or the full game? If you're benching the demo, I'll have to run it on my LAPTOP😀 Should be fun😉
