You could always get a ti4200 and o/c it to ti4400 speeds or better for 175ish, and save the rest of the cash for future upgrades.

If you are referring to brand, you are basically correct. Some people might tell you that X brand has better 2d quality and Y brand overclocks better, but save for certain features (VIVO, DVI output(s), tv-out) a ti4200 is a ti4200.

Wait until the game comes out first and then you'll have a better idea of what kind of video card you need.

Anyway, I have the Gainward Ti4600 golden sample and it's a great card although I probably will be upgrading to a 9700 or NV30 in a few months time.

Get a Geforce3, then when Doom3 comes out - roughly April 2003, get NV30, that way you cut the losses with more spare cash for anything else!

Wait for the Demo so you can see just how lacking you are. By the time the actual game comes out, Vid card prices will have dropped more, and you, the buyer will be in a much better position.
