UT Server will be back (I think its time to...)

Set up one big UT match.

Jator's server was pretty busy a few times I was there, but activity has dwindled to only a few people. How about we have a big CTF match? Instagib deathmatch? Come out from the cold of the real world and get toasty in front of the warm glow of your monitors. Of course, only if Jator is up for it.

BTW, I have a P3-868 on my university's network. Do you guys think it would be fast enough to host a game (with me still playing)?

Marty

Marty,

I don't have to be there as my UT server can be set up as dedicated, meaning I'm expendable.

Send me an e-mail or catch me on the IRC channel to let me know the specs you want on the server.

Remember, I can only run CTF, DM, or Assault at one time. TO switch, I have to kill the game and restart it and select different options.

Actually, if you have NT you can run a decent medium sized dedicated server from just a PII-233 and a PII-400 can host a fairly large 20+ dedicated server easily.

Using NT 4 Server on a PII 300. THe problem I face is the limited bandwith a cable modem provides vs. a TI.

I may not crack for Anand, but I sure would want to join ya guys 😀

I have been waiting for this......

we should discuss it further in the IRC Channel......

Yes.

I am cracking for my own team though...... My Website. And if I don't crack for that, SysOpt has priority..... That is my main place.....

I think I have a pretty good connection here at the University. I think it could handle a good number of people. The thing is, I don't have a second machine to run it on. All I have is the P3-868. I don't know how well it would handle it. Any comments?

I guess I could run a test now. Try me at 128.253.197.20 at 11:40 onwards.

Question,

Is DSL with 960 down and 128 up adequate for a server? What speed computer is necessary for sub 100 pings reliably (dedicated)?

What speed is necessary for a non-dedicated server? What about if I want to play on that computer?

Marty, (as a X-admin for a University network)

Make sure you have permission. If this is a dorm connection, they HATE having servers running on their network. They tend to take away access if you abuse it. 🙁

Tried the server. It's like in slow mo or something. What's your speed setting? Moot though, since I'm not a CTF fan.

So, if you guys set up a DM one evening, I'll gladly come by to humiliate you. 😉

if my hard drive at work had any room on it id host a game for you guys. P2 400 @ 420, 256mb, NT4, direct backbone connection via an OC3. But my little 4gb drive is full so I cant install any games 🙁

Good Game - Eug stopped by, and my roomate was playing too. I'll try the same thing tomorrow, perhaps a few hours earlier. Set that date in your calenders!

<< Is DSL with 960 down and 128 up adequate for a server? >>

Heh. No. 🙁
Generally assume that a user, will use about 8-10k/sec. while connected. Its not that high, but it gives you a comfort zone. I play half-life mostly, and the netgraph says im using about 1-2k/sec. up, and 1-3k/sec down (meaning that the server is uploading[sending] me data at 1-3KBytes/sec, and downloading 1-2KBytes/sec from me). But if you want to run a server assume higher numbers. Quake3 and UT, im not sure of their stats, but I think they use more bandwidth.

128Kbit DSL is 16Kbyte, now with 10 users using say 3-4Kbyte/sec for download on their end, you'd be uploading 30-40Kbytes/sec, right there your way over your limit. I hope thats clear..

While some cable lines can run servers well enough, if your really wanting to run a proper one, look for at least a T1 line, or DSL with 1.5Mbit upload (which is very rare, or extremly expensive).

It will be alright for maybe a 10-14 player server. If you do run it, you should run with the resolution at 640x480, no 3d sound, basically disable all the 'perks' and make sure you have like nothing running in the background! Heheh. Just cause its no fun when you get in a big frag fest, and everyone starts to lag out 🙁 🙁
