UT is running really choppy. Other games are fine; what gives?

I did a complete wipe and reload on my GFs PC. (Abit KT7R/256mb PC133/GF2 Pro/850 Athlon) running W2K SP2

I loaded UT, then patched it to v4.36. It runs really choppy and framerates suck. Before with Win98 I was getting 70FPS. Now getting around 20.

Interestingly, RTCW which is 10X more stressful on the system, runs like a champ. What could be wrong? I'm considering wiping/reloading UT. Advice?

Actually, no, I haven't tied that yet. As a matter of fact, I really didn't do much poking around in the control panel at all, aside from setting up the WASD-thing.

UT runs fine in D3D under all three of my machines...one of them is slower than my GF's 850 TBird. I'll try openGL though. Thanks. Anyone else have any ideas?

Bump for an old but still relevant question. It's been suggested to me that it may be the 23.11 dets that I'm using. While I acknowledge that anything is possible w/these wacky machines of ours, I really doubt it's the drivers as these are the same ones I use in all my machines and the same ones I was running on this very box before I wiped and reloaded w/W2K SP2.

Ideas, please?

Not trying to insult you or anything but....did you install the 4-in-1 drivers? I don't know how much of a difference it might make but it could be
worth a shot.....just in case. If you did, sorry! I couldn't think of anything else!

Switch to OpenGL. You'll be glad you did.

Some Detonator drivers run UT in D3D fine, others suck. It also seems to vary from OS to OS and from combo to combo.

Hey man, not an insult at all; I tell folks that everyday over in GH! It's cool. Yeah, they are in there. 4.37's too. That ain't it, as everything else is good to go.

Argh. You're the millionth person to tell me that. Why do I not want to? B/C UT runs fine under D3D under every other machine I've ever built OR loaded UT on. I'm just hard headed. I need to go over there and mess with the box. The PC, not her box...that happens later. ;) It's just that I get, uh, DISTRACTED when I go over there.

See, she plays sims like RollerCoaster Tycoon 90% of the time and UT the rest....but when she plays UT, she calls me and Whinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees :( I'll get to it. Thanks much.

Win 2k isnt as efficient for gaming as 98 as a rule. It is a resource hog. Just be happy you didnt a 3dfx card when you upgraded.
you would be lookin at a 20 to 30% decrease in performance simply due to an OS change.
The video card you have primarily a Open GL card if the game can be run in Open GL take advantage of the card.
Not changing the game to open gl is just plain FOOLISH.
Good luck. I hope you get your cake and eat it to.
