UT in linux kinda sucks....

I got unreal tournament goty working under linux, and it runs fine except for two things: 1, I get absolutely no sound, and 2, I get about half the framerate I do in win2k.

Is there something I can do to fix these?

Running RH 7.2, newest kernel.

I think I can fix the sound myself but i don't know about the framerate thing.

Suggestions?

well you already said you can probably fix the sound thing, as for the framerate, compile a new kernel, and make sure you have good video drivers, other than that, well, is it supposed to get the same framerate as in windows???

gaming in linux is pretty sketchy right now, good thing i dont play pc games 😛

just snes/psx emulators, and warcraft III when it comes out (YES!!!!!!)

the game was written for win32, and ported to linux. hence, you aren't going to see 100% of the performance you'd see in a win32 environment, as i doubt the authors did a total code-rewrite to take advantage of all the advantages writing a program for a UNIX based operating system has to offer. Remember, the drivers for your video card may not be tuned as nicely by your manufacturer as the ones they release for win32 are, too.

get an nvidia video card, you'll get the same framerates as windows.

RH 7.1, nvidia GF 3 ti200, nvidia 2314 drivers, q3 1600x1200x32 = 114fps

So, what about Q3???

I'm d/ling the linux binaries right now. Should I expect the same?

That kinda sucks...If gaming wuz gud on linux then I'd take a sledgehammer and microwave to all my disks with micro$ofts oses on them.

So far, everything I use a computer for works great, internet, email, DVDs, etc. but gaming. Dang! 🙂

Just had another thought....... what about WINE?

I haven't even tried using it yet, but how good is it?

I think I saw some screenshots of unreal running under WINE, perhaps I'll try it also.

Q3 should be decent providing your Radeon drivers don't suck. Almost all 3D gaming on Linux is nVidia right now, where the performance is almost exactly the same as Windows.

WINE would probably be worse because it has to go through another layer of abstraction, but if you have time it's worth a try.
