UT frame rate question

My frame rates top out in UT at 75. There doesn't seem to be any combination of settings to get it higher than 75. I'm using the 29.42 dets and the VIA 4.42's. V-sync is off and refresh rate patch applied with Riva Tuner. Frame rates measured using the game's Timedemo tool. Yeah, I know, 75 is fast enough, I'm just curious why it stops there. My wife's pc gets 100+.

See sig for pc details. Mine is Maggotry, wife's is Xena.

So even if you put all details down to low and put the resolution way down it still tops out at 70?

I get 75 FPS at 640x480x16 and at 1600x1200x32! The frame rate TANKS hard with any amount of AA turned on at any resolution. No other games I have experience these symptoms.

what is your refresh rate set to? Try 100 and see if it tops at 100. If not I suggest a purge of the registry and restart.

How are you benchmarking your systems, with a demo or just by walking around in a map?

One thing you can do is reset to the UT defaults. If you don't already know how to do this, it's pretty easy.

Make backup copies of the 'Unrealtournament.ini' and 'User.ini' files in your Unrealtournament/System folder.
Then delete them from the Unrealtournament/System folder.
Start UT and select your 3D device.
Either with a benchmark demo or in a map, check your framerate again with the timedemo tool.

I'm not too familiar with Nvidia drivers or their settings, but a complete un-install and re-install, might help out also.........

Just be glad you get good frame rates. My PC won't go over 27fps with fairly medium detail settings. I'm fairly sure it's because of Win 2K though.

I think in the UT ini file there is a refresh rate setting as well which you might try changing.

What API are your running UT under? Remember that you'll have to disable vsync under the same API.

Regardless, the best thing to do is to download the latest OpenGL renderer from Epic, copy the large textures as instructed, switch the renderer to OpenGL and you'll be set to go. Just remember to disable vsync under OpenGL.

cmdrdredd - refresh rate is set to 85. Changing it has no effect.

Nafets - I'm really not benchmarking the system. I'm just playing Assault with the Timedemo tool turn on. I tried different driver versions (29.42, 28.xx, 40.xx). They all do the same thing. I uninstalled and reinstalled the game which would have effectively replaced those files. And, yes, I know the uninstall leaves files behind. I manually deleted those before reinstalling.

BFG10K - I'm running it under D3D. V-sync is disabled for OpenGL. I don't see where, in the nvidia properties, to disable v-sync for D3D. How do I disable it for D3D? My refresh is set to 85, though, so I'd think I'd get at least 85fps, not 75fps. I'd like to investigate this first. Then I'll try the openGL method you suggest.

Is OpenGL the preferred method for running this game? Wasn't it originally built for Glide?

Edit: Did a search in the forums and see that v-sync for D3D has to be disabled using 3rd party software. I don't know why I never saw that using RivaTuner. I'll do that and try again. Still, with my monitor refresh at 85Hz, I don't know why I top out at 75?

OK, I disabled the D3D v-sync using RivaTuner. I played a 7 bot CTF game (The Last Command). At the end of the game, my fps average, using the timedemo tool, was 107. Settings are 1600x1200x32 no AA. I also figured out why I was capped at 75 when I had my refresh set at 85. It's because my monitor only supports 75Hz at 1600x1200, but I run my desktop screen resolution at 1280x1024 @ 85Hz.

Now that I feel incredibly stupid, thanks to all for your help. :)
