I have two computers, one is my wifes which is a dell P4 blah blah... the other is mine which i built and is a AMD 1800. I have been running the UT Demo since before the game came out and me and my kids do the onslaught thing all the time. no issue with speed at all

I got the game when it was released, DVD version and put it on my wifes Dell. It runs great no issues with speed. But last weekend i put the full game on my homebuilt box and holy christ, it take 15 minutes to load a map to play a game. And when the game does start its fricken SLOWWW....

I dont get it, if the demo of the same map runs great, why am I having issues with the full game? My system exceeds the min system requirements. AMD XP 1800, 512 Ram, 128mb Radeon video. it should run fine.

How fast is your hard drive? I've got UT2004 running on my eMachines m6809, and levels take forever to load with its 4200 rpm hard drive. The game runs great otherwise though.

Some levels can take 30 seconds to load on even an A64 3200+ with 1 GB, 9800 Pro, and WD Raptor drive, but 15 minutes (if you aren't wildly exaggerating) is insane.

Have you installed the mid-June patch? (the one after 3204)

Have you checked for spyware / adware / virus / trojan stealing memory and CPU time?

Ran disk checking / scandisk lately? Ever defragged the drive? Hear lots of clicking noises even when the drive is idle?

nope no patches, ill download them and put them on.

no spyware or any of that, i run adware every day

I defrag by sched task every night

brand new drive. its my second drive in my machine. very little on it.

Yes, 15 minutes is correct. I wonder if its a I/O problem with the onboard IDE.

Wasn't there some sort of cache setting tweak that could be changed to greatly improve UT 2004 performance on 512mb ram systems??

This one helps a lot of people including myself:
Settings > Game > Uncheck "Preload all player skins"

Try changing all game settings to low just as a test and see if that changes anything.

With 'only' 512MB of RAM it helps to close other open programs.

Is DMA turned on for your hard drive? Check in the IDE Controller advanced settings for both channels in the Device Manager.

It wasn't the preload player skins, although that is a game setting that should improve performance on 512mb systems. I don't know exactly know what the cache tweak was myself, was hoping someone would've. It was in the Software forums not too long back, could probably be found by searching. I don't remember if it was a XP/512mb issue or what, but since I do have XP and 512mb ram I kind of want to find that tweak for myself anyway!
