Or are navy radars and "stealth" messing up traditional navigation systems?
If a USN Destroyer were stealthy:
1) It's classified. So they'd be doing something to hide the fact that they're stealthy, probably making themselves MORE obvious on radar.
2) The cargo ships aren't invisible to radar, so a well-run destroyer should see it and GTFO of the way, even if the cargo ship is completely oblivious.
3) Sonar, and visual detection.
4) Running lights at night.
A collision at sea is like an accident on the highway, except everybody's moving at 25 miles a hour, everybody's car has collision avoidance, and the lanes are 200 feet wide. Sure, somebody could screw up and be a danger to you, but if they hit you, you still let it happen.
Everybody involved screwed up, and we'll probably never really know the details.
