Repeat after me.

I am driving a warship, not suicide torpedo.

Maybe that chinese weapon to disable radar/navigations systems is further along than we thought...

As i said in the last one, regardless of the facts the navy is "at fault" and expect to see another round of reliefs.

But WTF, any time something like that happened you were supposed to be in ass clinched mode cause you didn't want too be the next guy. Way too soon there boys.

I totally envision the situation occurring as this old Lighthouse joke.

Believe it or not...this is the transcript of an actual radio conversation between a US naval ship and Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October 1995. The Radio conversation was released by the Chief of Naval Operations on Oct. 10, 1995. (part of the joke)

US Ship: Please divert your course 0.5 degrees to the south to avoid a collision.

CND reply: Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

US Ship: This is the Captain of a US Navy Ship. I say again, divert your course.

CND reply: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course!

US Ship: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS CORAL SEA*, WE ARE A LARGE WARSHIP OF THE US NAVY. DIVERT YOUR COURSE NOW!!

CND reply: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

"There have now been four incidents this year involving ships from the 7th fleet. In May, a guided missile cruiser collided with a South Korean fishing vessel, and in January another cruiser ran aground in Tokyo Bay."

I can see why...

I read something that an initial report said the naval ship might have lost steering which would make me feel a tiny bit better. If it's a similar fuckup to the last one then I don't know how anyone takes our navy seriously. We can't even get the boats from point A to point B without running into shit or shit running into them.

YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- Adm. Scott Swift, commander of U.S. Pacific Fleet, today relieved the commander of Seventh Fleet, Vice Adm. Joseph Aucoin, due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command.

Rear Adm. Phil Sawyer, who has already been nominated and confirmed for the position and promotion to vice admiral, will assume command immediately

Loss of confidence? You don't say...

As I mentioned earlier, the missiles are guided, the ships are not. That's why people take our navy seriously. While the ships are sailing around like a Benny Hill chase scene gone wrong the missiles can still fly up a gnats ass from 50 miles away.

Maybe we should adapt the guidance systems we use in the missiles to drive the ships. One thing is sure, those missiles aren't going anywhere while the ship is in port for a year or two getting repaired.

I think dji quadcopters have collision avoidance technology. Maybe our navy should hit them up.

Or are navy radars and "stealth" messing up traditional navigation systems?

If a USN Destroyer were stealthy:

1) It's classified. So they'd be doing something to hide the fact that they're stealthy, probably making themselves MORE obvious on radar.
2) The cargo ships aren't invisible to radar, so a well-run destroyer should see it and GTFO of the way, even if the cargo ship is completely oblivious.
3) Sonar, and visual detection.
4) Running lights at night.

A collision at sea is like an accident on the highway, except everybody's moving at 25 miles a hour, everybody's car has collision avoidance, and the lanes are 200 feet wide. Sure, somebody could screw up and be a danger to you, but if they hit you, you still let it happen.

Everybody involved screwed up, and we'll probably never really know the details.
