Actually amazingly they are not. I was checking prices and 56K internal non-winmodems are still around the $60 range. I don't know why either.

Might as well bet the new modem that allows you to answer the phone without dropping your connection (V.92 standard?).

I know most ISP's are not supporting this new standard now, but the modems are out there, for about the same price. Why buy obselescence?

buy because cable/dsl modems and the services that use them are out of the financial/logistical reach of many.
that said, i'm interested (i found out the hardware modem i bought in august is isa instead of pci--aren't i intelligent? not). does newegg take money orders? tia

The reasons HARDWARE modems are still so expensive is because they have the CoDec chips.

Many of the cheapy $10-$20 dollar deals are WinModems. Their Coding/Decoding is handled all by the CPU through software.

For most users with powerful PCs, this is negligable. But, for those with BSD/Linux/UNIX systems, the WinModems are worthless.

At CompUSA, they're selling the 3COM US Robotics 56K/14.4 V.90 External Data/Fax Modem for 99.99 until March 10 and you can get a rebate for $50 from US Robotics. Total 49.99+tax

Actually, I think the CompUSA deal is $80 with a $30 MIR. It is also upgradeable to V.92.
