usr 5689 modem for mac to xp?

hey all. i have a usr 5689 external modem. it was with an old mac i got and i got the correct cable and hooked it up to my pc running xp. i installed it as a usr external 56k modem and it says modem is operating correctly but it fails diagnostics. has anyone had experience with this or know what i should do? initialization strings etc?
