usps tracking

Lifer
so i ordered a pair of sennheiser hd497 headphones from amazon this past weekend and they finally shipped yesterday. i check the usps tracking site today and it shows this:

Date Time Location Service Area Checkpoint Details
Jun 30, 2005 ATLANTA GA US Departure Scan
Jun 29, 2005 04:55:00 PM CAMPBELLSVILLE KY US Arrival Scan
Jun 29, 2005 US Carrier notified to pick up package

Estimated Arrival: Jul 07, 2005

so the package arrived in kentucky yesterday and departed atlanta today (i am in atl). wtf? its the backwards shipment (yes i realize that it left ky and arrived in atl) the usps is retarded.

Their tracking is almost worthless. About the only thing they can get right is whether or not the package got there, and that's spotty at best.

indeed worthless. i had a package that i was tracking and it never went anywhere. i never got it either (until the sender said it was returned to her).

i'd assume the estimated delivery date of july 7th has something to do with the holiday weekend, but chances are, you'll get it earlier.

I too must be retarded. The shipper notified the carrier to pick up the package on June 29, 2005. It arrived at the KY postal office at 4:55 on June 29. Then it shipped to Atlanta (which they didn't write on the tracking). Then it departed the Atlanta post office to your house on June 30. What is backwards?

My package has been "enroute" since yesterday morning. The distance they need to travel? 7 miles. so, 24+ hours so far to go 7 miles...lovely

I think you are best just sitting at home waiting for the package to come rather than actually try and figure out their tracking

Guess I fall into that category, too......because that's the way I read it also.

For UPS:

Jun 28, 2005
12:47 P.M. NEWBURY PARK, CA, US DELIVERY
7:57 A.M. NEWBURY PARK, CA, US OUT FOR DELIVERY
6:00 A.M. NEWBURY PARK, CA, US ARRIVAL SCAN
4:07 A.M. VERNON, CA, US DEPARTURE SCAN
1:02 A.M. VERNON, CA, US ARRIVAL SCAN

Jun 23, 2005
6:37 A.M. DORAVILLE, GA, US DEPARTURE SCAN
1:44 A.M. DORAVILLE, GA, US ARRIVAL SCAN

Jun 22, 2005
8:04 P.M. STATESBORO, GA, US DEPARTURE SCAN
6:36 P.M. STATESBORO, GA, US ORIGIN SCAN
5:14 P.M. US BILLING INFORMATION RECEIVED

So I guess it was on one plane/truck the entire time between GA and CA......never was scanned anywhere in between.

Or this one:

Feb 21, 2005
3:01 P.M. ROME, NY, US DELIVERY

Feb 16, 2005
4:54 P.M. US BILLING INFORMATION RECEIVED

That's all the info that was posted on their site for this particular package......it shipped on Feb. 16 from my same shipping site and seems to never have been scanned anywhere along its deliver route until 5 days later.

ALL the delivery services have issues getting tracking info posted in a timely and proper manner. I've had packages that seem to be being taken off and on a truck repeatedly at one location.....it scans as departure then arrival then departure and then arrival at the same hub....have seen it do this up to 3 times over several hours. Or it departs over and over the same place and never goes anywhere.

And of course, while everyone's bashing USPS's lack of route tracking of a package using Delivery or Signature Confirmation, I'd almost guarantee not one has actually read what the USPS states about tracking w/DC:

Tracking a Package vs Confirming the Delivery of a Package: Link to FAQ answer.

Tracking services provide detailed information. You will see the item scanned at acceptance, as it travels, and when it is delivered. Tracking information is available for Express Mail® mailpieces only (including Global Express Guaranteed®?* and Global Express Mail?*).

Services that confirm delivery are designed to be a low cost alternative to full tracking. Instead of seeing the acceptance information and updated scans as the item is enroute, delivery confirmation services provide assurance of delivery or of attempted delivery. This service is available with the purchase of the following:

Delivery Confirmation? service.
Signature Confirmation® service.
Certified Mail? service.
Registered Mail? service.
International Registered Mail? service.

This is from the USPS FAQ on delivery confirmation vs. package tracking. I'd almost bet no one actually understands delivery and signature confirmation is NOT for actual route tracking info but is instead just to show shipment and attempted/completed delivery.

But let's not confuse the issue with the facts....it's so much more fun bashing with no idea what one's talking about.

USPS has tracking? I thought they only had Delivery Confirmation ... which is less then worthless. Ship an item, wait for it to show up in their system, item arrives but NEVER shows up as being scanned!

I bought something from BUY.com on 6/27. They shipped it via USPS. When you "track" the package here is what you get:

"Status: There is no record of that mail item. If it was mailed recently, it may not yet be tracked. Please try again later. "

What a surprise ...

The few times that something has been sent to me by USPS w/DC the info has been inaccurate.

That and the tendancy of the USPS to leave things in my mail box/porch that should really have been signed for has me not using them for parcels.
