USPS "Track" and Confirm system is horrible

I really wish the USPS's tracking was better. I am very seriously considering switching to UPS because of how good their system is.
Does this frustrate anyone else?
Package handling-wise who is better?

For low value items (under $50) I use USPS and so far I have had no problems.

Otherwise I use FedEx Ground, Airborne Express or UPS.

If you're a seller who accepts Paypal remember they DO NOT recognize USPS as an acceptable method of online tracking.

Yeah, I find USPS's tracking kinda stupid, especially for Priority Mail.

They make you pay extra for a confirmation number, which BTW as Rossman said, does not constitute a valid method for proof of delivery. Furthremore, other places like UPS/Fedex, a tracking # is included in your shipping at no extra charge. And it's updated faster and more frequently.

Seriously, how much does it actually cost USPS to add a number to each package for tracking? Probably close to none.

There's always going to be bad service from any one of those three places USPS, FedEx or UPS =)

Just depends on who's your delivery person and where you live.

USPS is a little more quick to refund shipping costs if something doesn't arrive on time and stuff like that... I think cause people at the post office just don't care... they're government employees so they don't necessarily have to do their job well, just stand there and wear the shirt.

USPS lost three packages in the last 4 weeks. It failed to track 2 additional ones.

I concur with your thoughts of migration.

fedex and ups have a habit of being too lazy to ring my doorbell and leave an "attempted delivery" slip on my door

I read somewhere awhile back that the USPS is working to change it's tracking system. (Don't remember where, and I don't have a link)

However, UPS isn't much better sometimes. It seems the dreaded "Billing Information Received" keeps popping up. Which means the actual UPS tracking number was not scanned. The information was just transmitted electronically to the UPS database. More and more often I will receive the package before it shows up in the UPS online tracking.

I agree with murphy55d. Fedex is currently doing the best job overall.

That's why it's free. :p

My uncle was calling in some outgoing boxes to UPS...over $10 for 1-2lb 10x7x7-ish packages! That's insane, IMHO...I haven't had problems with USPS with my trading (except one Canada package took three weeks instead of one..but that may be Canada's fault..I dunno). From my experience, USPS Priority gets small/light packages to their destination in about half the time as UPS Ground, and for about half the cost. I do like Fedex, though..

Only for express mail they do. For regular priority mail, they don't care if it takes 3 days or 30 days.

They don't call it tracking ... it is now called "Delivery COnfirmation" ... which only change the status after it is delivered.

What can you expect from the government? They need to hire people from UPS and Fedex for them to write a good tracking system.
