The USPS drops stuff off in front of your house, right? Or do they pull the old UPS and bring it back to the warehouse? Does Track & Confirm ever say a package was delivered when it really wasn't?

I bought an item last Saturday, which shipped out through Priority Mail on Monday. Today, I checked the T&C from USPS and it said the item had been delivered today. However, I arrived home after the delivery date, but never saw the package... what gives?

Your item was delivered at 1:57 PM on November 15, 2006 in ......

but, it definitely wasn't.

I'm not sure if the deliverer left a slip in the mailbox saying that they brought my package back to the Post Office, so can anyone guess as to what happened to my package?

The mailman or driver would scan it once he delivers it

Hmm... I see.

Do they bring it back to the post office? I'm living in a neighborhood where it's highly unlikely something would be stolen from my front step. Also, if there was a thief involved, then he would've only had a 40 minute time frame to take it.

At times, they will scan it as delivered, when they end up not actually doing so.

The item then goes back to the PO and gets shelved. Sometimes you may get a notice that there was a package, other times, they ignore the issue - different department.

Best to contact the PO and ask them. They can contact the carrier to find out what actaully was done.
