So I ordered a pair of leather toestraps for my bicycle a couple days ago and I received the package (it was in a big yellow envelope) today. I go home to find the envelope empty (except for the receipt) and it seemed as if it had been opened then resealed. I know the item was taken from the envelope because the inside of the envelope smells like leather. Anyway, I contacted the place I ordered the straps from and they told me to contact USPS...so I go to the post office and they give me a number to the specific carrier whom I'll have to wait until tomorrow to call.

On second thought, I'm not sure if there's much I can do...there's no way I can prove that I didn't just take the item and claim that there was nothing inside...am I screwed? Has this happened to anyone else before?

Fortunately the straps cost only $36 shipped but it still sucks.

I'd love to say that there is something you could do to get what you paid for, but the reality is that there is a 99.999% chance that won't happen.
You can call every # in the book and talk to everyone at USPS in person and you'd still never find out what happened or get a resolution.
Unless the company is like Newegg (they have resent me two items I didn't recieve in my history with them) then it's over and you're out the money.
They already told you to take it up with USPS, so I'd say the retailer isn't going to help if USPS doesn't come through.

This happened to me a few years ago. My sister sent me a few things including a gift card in a VHS-sized USPS Priority Mail box. When I got it, it had the birthday card and some random adhesive strips for mounting photos in it. I didn't understand, but I didn't say anything.

My sister then asks if I can use the gift card, and I'm like WTF?? The Priority Mail box had been opened and some hair and carpet fiber crap was stuck to the adhesive. I swear it had to be an inside job because how does a Prioity Mail box leave the postal system and then get back into it to be delivered? My mailbox requires a key.

I talked to the postal workers at my local main branch. They didn't care much, but they had me fill out something for the Postmaster General. I never heard anything from anyone about it.

You're screwed unless you want to pin it back onto the merchant or Paypal.

I've considered this, but I have a similar ethics issue with this as with filing a paypal dispute. I know that the place I ordered it from didn't send out an empty package, so I don't want to put them at fault, but then my money...

In the end I might just have to man up and swallow the fact that the thief won. $36 isn't the end of the world but being a victim of mail theft sucks.

Yeah I kind of figured.

Your story sounds worse than mine...I'm just wondering if pursuing this is even worth my time if, in the end, nothing is going to happen anyway.

Worst thing is that instead of having the package delivered directly to the doorstep of my house (where it is much more likely to be stolen) I have my packages delivered to my school's mailroom instead, where I know it will be safe and I can pick it up at my leisure.

Guess those jokers at the mailroom really wanted my leather double toestraps :|

It's a bit more for a college student...

I'm not crying about it but this is the first time I've gotten something stolen in the mail and it kind of sucks. I do consider myself lucky that it wasn't something more valuable, though.

EDIT: TIIIIIIME WAAAARP!!!

What good does that do if usps believes that they rightfully delivered it.

I went through worse than the OP. I've contact the postmaster, local post office and some usps fraud division. I haven't heard anything back from them. I had insurance on my packages + signature confirmation. It doesn't matter one iota if that signature is falsified.

If you're not willing to take serious and costly action such as a lawyer etc, you cant do anything about it all the usps agencies wont help you.

This should be taken care of by the merchant. The only thing you should have to do is provide the evidence and paperwork for them to make an insurance claim.

Call up the store you got them from. Say you have to order another set because yours got stolen from the mail and ask if they can give you a discount or something. If they're nice they'll give you cost+shipping.
