USPS hit the mailbox and ran...

Last Friday, USPS carrier came and the backend of the truck slid into the mailbox's metal clasp, hooked on where the handles are on in the back of the truck, and as they were pulling out, broke the box almost off the post.

They just yelled "Sorry!" from the truck's window, and kept on going.

Looking at the box, the plastic support under the box snapped off leaving the screws, so you can basically tilt the whole thing on the side, it still has 1 screw left holding the whole thing, and right now using bungie ropes to secure it back on.

I am just curious, do they give you anything for the damage they caused?
Would the postal carrier file a claim, I mean, it is pretty obvious they broke it...

Deny, deny, deny.

If you don't have verifiable proof...they're not going to accept responsibility for it.

Depending on the town in which you live, it might be your responsibility to repair. Local laws vary a lot on this. But, in many locations, it's "put the mailbox on the public right of way at your own risk."

Drama Queen - Get some darn screws and fix it you sissy.

Screws won't fix it, there is no mounting points anymore...and besides, it is 5F outside... too darn cold to fix anything correctly. :p

I just wondered what their policy was, couldn't find anything on their site.

This box cost $70.
Poor Box.

Time to make your own mailbox out of 1/4" plate steel and put in in the ground with a concrete filled steel post 1:1 above and below.

Problem car?

It's all fun and games until you get arrested and sued for killing someone. ;)

I don't know if it was a plow or what, but my mailbox was almost torn off. The horizontal post got ripped off of the vertical one in my case. The mailbox itself is still attached.

Last night I bought one of those plastic mailboxes hoping I can just slide it over the vertical post later in the week when it's warmer

Try placing a board to block the impact of the snow from hitting the mailbox so it's facing where the snow comes from when the plow goes by.

Worked fine here for 10+ years as long as you re-secure it after you remove it when winter goes by.

Right just like a building, a concrete wall, another car, utility pole, concrete filled poles blocking ditches and bike lanes and numerous other immovable objects where cars aren't supposed to be.

Conditions allowing you to be killed by a mailbox means you were going too fast and were going to die or get ripped apart no matter what you hit.

I suppose planting trees in your front yard can some day get you arrested for murder long after you have moved out of the property too.

I'm sure there are codes regulating mailbox installation but rest assured I would happily design a mailbox compliant with that code and still capable of inflicting severe and undesirable damage to your vehicle if you want to be a careless smart ass and damage my property intentionally or negligently without remorse or any intention of compensation.

I endeavor in everything I do that willful acts of malice and negligence towards me or any 3rd party in my witness will ALWAYS hurt you a lot more than it's going to hurt me. That is the only acceptable outlook on life that stops people prone to being dicks, from being a dick. Once people accept that they can't be dicks without hurting themselves, the world is a better place.

Going to have to get all CSI on 'em and scrape off the USPS-issued white body paint as evidence.

Replace that mail box right away! Think of the poor junk mail with no where to stay between the mail truck and the recycle bin.

He was working when I went to inquire about this...
"You sure it wasn't the plow?" Yes.
"You still getting mail right?" Yes.
"What's the problem then?" It is broken.
"You still getting mail right?" Yes, but, it is tied down with bungie cords.
"Duct tape works as well!" I bet it does, why didn't she tape it when she hit it?
"Call this number..." Thanks.

Saw a farmer there who overheard all this, and he said, don't bother, it takes 4 months to get back $20, and you have to fill out a 6 page document.

Some teenager just ran over my mailbox, recycling bin, hit my car, struck my tree, and finally did a 360 in my driveway.

Needless to say, her insurance company is paying for it all including $50 for my mailbox labor.

The code in my city is that you cannot have an upright mailbox that can cause undo harm to the car upon hitting it. Basically, it can't be a brick mailbox with concrete in it. It must be a hollow brick structure with really no support.
