USPS delivery exception, what does this mean?

Hello ,
Your package has a delivery exception. Your item was forwarded to a different address at 8:28 am on March 26, 2021 in BERKELEY, CA. This was because of forwarding instructions or because the address or ZIP Code on the label was incorrect.
Got that email today. ~2 hours later I got another email from USPS saying the package was delivered. I go out to my front porch, look everywhere, it's not there.

What could this mean? It's from an eBay seller, one that does a lot of business. It's kind of difficult for me to think the seller had an incorrect address or zip for me, I'd think the shipping label would be auto-generated from my ebay/paypal data.

The item:

Under my orders at Ebay it says it was delivered. Should I complain at Ebay or wait a few days for the USPS to get it to me. This is weird!

I would call them in the AM unless the tracking gets updated back to "enroute". A "delivery-exception" could mean any number of problems most of which just lead to delay... the delivered part would have me concerned.

By call them I suppose you mean my local post office. I've gotten through to them a number of times. Not sure it's easy. Ebay can be reached by phone, again not necessarily easily.

Yeah, the delivered thing is worrisome. I had that happen over a year ago for an item and I never got it. Supposedly delivered to some small town in CA I never heard of. But this here was supposedly in my own town.

Yes. Try USPS first.

I can tell you from experience that USPS normally obtains GPS coordinates for each package delivery, so they can usually pinpoint exactly where it was left.

I know this because I went through a period where our mail person kept leaving my packages (over two dozen consecutive ones, no less) in the door of an empty house 15 miles from my home. So, I was forced to call the local postmaster. I was nice the first few times, but got downright nasty with him after number five. He'd look up the delivery address in the computer, check the recorded delivery coordinates against the delivery address, see they were different, apologize profusely, then make the idiot mail lady go get it and deliver it to me. Over and over and over again. How she could do this without being punished just speaks to the current state of USPS. I can tell you by the end that the postmaster (and his supervisor) knew it was me on the phone without even having to ask my name. The fact that Amazon is mostly using USPS now (or transfers to USPS for delivery) for everything made it so much worse.

Thankfully, she seems to have gotten the message for now, though I'm not hopeful it will stick. Apparently USPS will hire anybody as long as they have at least three active brain cells.....

If it turns out that the delivery address was bad, then immediately go back to eBay and report the problem to the seller to see how they want to handle it.

I had something similar to this happen to me, although I was never given a detailed reason - it just said "Delivery exception" and then showed delivered even though I had no package yet.

It has happened twice now, and both times I received the package within a day or 2. Their system just isn't very good still.

Yeah, thanks... I figure wait a few days, at least until Monday or Tuesday before rustling the bushes.

So, this morning I got two emails from the USPS concerning this item, both identical, both received at the same time, 7:39AM, both saying "Out for Delivery."

USPS, well oiled machine.

Mostly because declaring something as "delivered" when it in fact wasn't should be grounds for immediate termination.

But - lets not have such realistic expectations.

They did that to me a week ir so back. Marked as "delivered" early in the day...wasn't actually delivered until about 5 pm.

I'm dealing with a FedEx delivery exception right now. Ordered a new pair of boots last week, opted for the free FedEx shipping...which, while slow, is usually dependable. Something happened in North Dakota...(Indians attacked the mail train?) Last scan was yesterday early morning in Whitefish, Montana...nothing since. Called FedEx..."I am so sorry to be hearing this. I'm afraid I have no further informations that vill be helping you, but I can pass this on to operations. They vill be calling you back immediately....6 hours later...:crickets:

IME the "slow" (ie: ground) version of Fedex completely sucks.

Not sure if it's still the case but they used to be sub-contractors doing the deliveries so it wasn't even really Fedex.

Maybe for transport. It's always a FedEx truck and uniformed driver who makes the deliveries.

Anyway, tracking status FINALLY changed. Package is in Oregon...with delivery scheduled for tomorrow. (FedEx on Sunday?) o_O

Sane shit has happened to me with all the carriers, gets delivered the next day. Least of all with UPS, but it has happened.

I still prefer USPS, they can leave packages in my building. Ever since the cool UPS guy died from covid-19 last year, the new guys will actually leave shit on the doorstep which easily gets stolen. Not always but he never did.

I've even had USPS deliver on Sunday ... in my experience that's rare. Nowadays I'm never sure. I get deliveries after 8PM sometimes. Nothing's consistent. Best thing about deliveries these days is the email notifications. Pre and post delivery. Sometimes they fuck those up, you look and it's not there. A lot of the delivery people seem to not be thinking judging by where they leave packages. Still, I love ordering online... literally a life saver during the pandemic.

USPS has a hard enough time delivering my regular mail. Not sure i could trust them with a package. Plus, if it doesn't fit in the mailbox i just have to go pick it up at the local post office anyway.
I know it's not an option for everyone but it's been really nice to be able to have my stuff delivered to work, no matter the shipper. No problems since i started doing that.

Apparently GPS systems need an update. I've had packages delivered to me for people that don't even live on my road. Just the other day a nurse stopped, looking for someone. Her GPS had the wrong road too, or so she said. At least i could get her going in the right direction.

This reminded me of when I bought a Sega Dreamcast on eBay from some guy on a military base. The package took a week to travel cross-country from Cali to the East Coast and made it to my town, but tracking showed it went to the wrong post office, 4 miles from where it should have gone....so of course, they shipped it back to the originating post office in California before sending it cross country again to the correct post office.....like 3 weeks + on the road before it was delivered.

If I get an exception or a package shows as delivered and it's not here I give the carrier a call. I usually call the 1-800 numbers but I do have a local secret UPS number that I use quite frequently. Fedex won't really do much for you and they tell you to have the sender call. By the time that happens and they investigate the driver has no idea where he left the package which pisses me off. Also, apparently UPS and Fedex doesn't have the ability to tag directions to my address and neither has or uses GPS. On Friday my driver was parked 15 ft. from my house in the morning and didn't deliver a PC I bought so it got to ride around all over BFE WV on back roads. He finally delivered it at 9:41PM on the way back to the garage.

Recently I had two issues which was kind of weird, since I've probably only had a few shipping problems since I've been buying stuff online (past 20+ years). I was finally able to order some dumbells from Amazon: 2x10lb., 2x15lb., 2x20lb., and 2x25lb.

At the origin, the 2x15lb. ones were "damaged in transit" and returned about three weeks ago, and I got a refund. Shipping status still says item is on the way.

I ordered another set of the 15lb. and got them within a couple of days. The 2x10lb. and 2x20lb. arrived without issues. The 2x25lb. were last marked as being loaded on the vehicle, but that was 2.5 weeks ago, so I ended up just getting a refund. Shipping status still hasn't changed.

I think the delivery dudes kept the dumbbells to resell on Craigslist or something.

That happened to me a number of times over the past few years in my old town, ten months in the new place and it hasn't happened here yet, knock on wood.

I have noticed that they aren't delivering Lithium-ion batteries. I understand that it is dangerous, but the main problem is that I can't buy some batteries for my vape in my region, so I always need to find a way to order them online. The only way to get them is to order them on Amazon. Of course, for some additional money. Also, they have a package tracker, which is very nice. I like that you can use t to check where your parcel is situated, so you can estimate approximately when your batteries will arrive. This is why I like Amazon.
