I sent a certified letter to someone to a specific zip code in Sacramento. When I view the tracking it shows it was delivered to a different, albeit nearby, zip code.

What gives? Anyone else encounter this before?

I have a customer who lives in one town but has a zip code in the next town over.

Right address but different zip code? Not sure how that can happen unless it was entered incorrectly or misread by the delivery person.

My certified mail receipt even shows the correct zip code on it. I mean do they enter the delivery zip code manually or something?

The city I live in has two zip codes because it is so large. Usually USPS marks the package as delivered when it arrives at that cities zip code. So, is it possible that the post master in that zip code services part of that destined city when you wanted the package to go? (this is poorly worded)

Did you print your own label through USPS or another service like Stamps.com or Endicia, or did you take it down to the local Post Office?

If it was the local Post Office the front desk worker may have fat-fingered the info when they input it into the system. However, it still may have been delivered to the correct address. If possible contact the recipient to see if they received it.

It was at the local post office and I have the receipt here with the correct zip code. Weird.

That is strange because pretty much everything is electronically scannned now by USPS. The address info is encoded in the barcode of the tracking label and once entered into the system it shouldn't change.

Call USPS Customer Service and ask them what's going on.

Thanks for all the help guys, anyone have any more insight on this? I will probably just have to wait until I get a reply from the recipient.

If it says it's been delivered, it may mean that whoever received the letter in the zip code you're seeing might have accidentally input it incorrectly. I used to work for USPS and we manually scan certified letters and would have to input it as received, etc.

Also, it might mean that your destination might be part of the hub that the "delivered" zip code it's in. If that's the case, should be there the same day or Monday if it's on Saturday. But, seeing as how it's a holiday on Monday, the letter will be delivered on Tuesday.

Color me surprised. I sent the USPS an email on Friday, got a response on Monday (holiday) and the post office called me today and explained that something about their scanner reports a certain zip code but it was delivered. Got to say that was awesome service. Thanks for the input everyone.
