i want to see if i could get my 640 system to work with windows x64. i have a intel mother board
http://www.intel.com/technology/64bitextensions/
it shows there stuff about it but it doesnt say exactly how to enable it or if my processor and motherboard are compatable. is it possible for me to get this 64 bit operating system up and running? ide love to have 64 bit because windows would be so much faster.

I'd have to check for sure, but I do believe that you wouldn't have a problem running it. I may take my 830 and try to install it tomorrow, just to see for sure.

well i just tried it and it worked! windows x64 works on my 640 pentium. i decided not to stick with it tho. its not THAT much faster and it doesnt support a lot of things. its not worth the hassle. i might not be that much faster because i only have 2 "logical" processors and not actually a 64 bit processor. so its a 32 bit processor trying to be a 64 bit. thats what i think anyway...

You're referring to hyperthreading. It appears the same in 32-bit Windows, no?

Incorrect. The P4 640 is truly a 64 bit processor (how its performance in 64 bit applications compares to that of the Athlon 64, I'm not sure), and the Hyperthreading won't hurt you - most of the time. It sometimes even helps. Nonetheless, even though you came to your conclusion through incorrect reasoning, you still concluded the same way that I did after trying to run XP64 for a few months on my Athlon 64 X2; it's simply not worthwhile given the current state of driver availability and application compatibility.

well thats what i was kinda comparing it to, a athlon 64 that doenst have just 2 logical 32 bit processors. or does the athlon have somewhat the same concept? i dunno anything about them. and i know hyperthreading wont hurt me, i like it because its good for multitasking and performance. and i came to my conclusion the same way you did, so i dont see how its inncorrect. "it doesnt support a lot of things" which meant drivers, programs, etc. its just too much of a hassle for not much performance gain.

im just glad it can support 64 bit so its good for when it finally goes mainstream.

You're right about Windows XP x64 not being generally useful at this time. You're wrong in your concept of how the P4's "64-bitness" works. Both Athlon 64s and Pentium 4s with EM64T have 64 bit registers, etc., and can address more than 2^32 bytes of RAM (the exact amount varies, and doesn't actually reach 2^64 yet). I don't feel like looking it up now so I can explain it better, but if you want more information, Google is your friend.
