using webcams as motion detector???

i saw those x10 ads
n wonder if a regular webcam can do all that. such as, senses motion, alarms the user away from home via cell phone or email. its all software right? n if so what software do i need to do this?

If I remember correctly logitech's camera software has motion detection and you can d/l for free. However........ keep in mind that I'm not exactly sure how the rest works, like if you can stream it or set off alrms and such. I just remember installing it about 2 or 3 months ago and it had motion detection in it.
