Using Virtual PC 2004

These days I am trying to write .NET applications that work on all platforms... As a practice, I am trying to write a LAN based program, like a chat messenger, with one end in Fedora Core 5, and the other in Windows. For this, I I just set up Fedora Core 5 as a guest OS on my Windows XP SP2, using Microsoft's Virtual PC 2004. I am having 2 main problems:

1) I have a DSL internet connection, which I can access perfectly in Windows XP, but I cannot access the internet from within Fedora Core 5. I have tried the 'Shared Networking' option, but it doesnt work..

2) I want to make a LAN connection between Fedora Core 5 and the Windows XP, so that I can test LAN based programs...Like a LAN chat messenger. Is this possible..??

Thanx in advance..

I know this place probably isnt right for this sorta stuff, but I didnt know where to ask blush.gif ...Please tell me if you know any forums relating to this sorta stuff....

What type of network connection does the Fedora VM have? I haven't used VirtualPC for a while but I think you want the Bridged mode, where the client is "directly" connected to the network.

I use VPC2004 and I have no problem installing a Windows based guest OS on it and using my DSL connected to a router. Sorry if its not much help for you directly as I do not use Linux.

Have you tried using the free VMPlayer from VMWare? You can download free images for various linux distros or you can install QEMU to make your own virtual machine images. You can google for a how-to on qemu if you decide to go that route. I have Ubuntu 6.06 working great as a guest in VMPlayer on my XP laptop.

ok I will try out VMware then 🙂. does it support images made with VPC 2004 ? Otherwise I would have to install FC5 all over again...

I've used both and yes I've heard VMWare will support VPC images. The free player has some limitations tho. Can't do a snapshot and rollback and some other things I can't remember right now.

VPC 2007 Beta is also available for free and works quite well. FWIW, it's finally caught up to VMware in terms of speed IMO.

(I'm still only running it because VMware doesn't work quite properly in Vista yet =P)

get vmware server, its free

also if you can I would get vmware converter which is in beta right now, it can convert virtual pc images to vmware ones

Hold up everyone, we haven't even really started to figure out his problem with VPC before suggesting something else. And VMware Server isn't a cheap option in terms of hardware.

OP, you said that you have tried the Shared Networking (NAT) option which of course won't work. Did you attempt to find a "Bridged" mode?

OK well I tried loading the VMC file of FC5 that I made with VPC 2004, into VMPlayer, but while VMPlayer is importing the FC5 image, I get this error:

The virtual machine or image at "C:\FC5.vmc" could not be opened.
VMware Virtual Machine Importer has encountered an internal error: boot.ini was not found on the active partition.

How can I fix this ?
