Using Uplink on a switch to add more Lan Ports to a router?

Not sure if this would work or how to go about it however I currently use the D-Link DGL-4300 wireless router 10/100/1000 connected to my cable modem and I have already populated all 4 wired lan ports. I have an old Linksys BEFSR-41 switch laying around and would like to use the uplink port to add another four ports mind you they will be 10/100 which is plenty fast enough to share the internet connection. Is is possible to connect the router and swtich to give me a total of 8 wired Lan ports?

If so how do I go about doing so?

You'd lose another GbE port on the router when linking the "switch". I'd suggest getting an inexpensive 8-port or so GbE switch in addition instead of try to hack the old router in as a small switch.

To hack the router into a switch, you should connect to it directly, then set its IP to be in the same subnet as your main router, but outside its DHCP range (or statically assigned). Then you should disable the old router's DHCP service. Then if you link ports to its switch, it should work like a dumb switch -- connect one port to the router and you have a link to the internet and other ports on the router.

Should prefer GbE switch for you to have a 1000 on all the PCs on the network. 🙂
