Using two devices with my cars input jack

My car radio has a 3.5mm input jack that I use to connect to my MP3 player. I recently got a new GPS and its pretty quiet even at the highest settings. I can hear it ?talking? but depending on the song\volume\window down\etc I sometimes cant make out what its saying. The GPS has an audio jack out that I could use to plug into the stereo to improve this. The GPS can play MP3s but the experience isn?t all that pleasant and would much rather just use my MP3 player.

Is there away to connect both of these devices to my cars input jack simultaneously? Im assuming its not as simple as just plugging in a $1 headphone splitter. Is there a relatively inexpensive thing\device I could buy\build that will make this work?

You're going to need at least one of these.

;)

OK, actually I think the only question with a simple Y-splitter would be whether either of those devices would be damaged by having signals rammed into them the wrong way by the other device. I expect they would be fine because we're talking about pretty low-power signals, but I wouldn't want to be responsible if something fried!

Ok so its narrowed down to a $5 part and a $100,000 part. Thats a start, I guess.

This is what Im most concerned about as its either a $250 MP3 player, $270 GPS, or $??? car stereo.

If you're up for some soldering, add some 16 ohm resistors on the signal lines to keep the drivers from fighting too much and you'll be good.
