Using Turion64 on a Desktop

Imagine the insane incompatibilities with motherboards/BIOSes. We tried this with the A64 DTRs/mobiles and it was a headache. The overclocks won't matter as it's still based on A64 architecture, choice binned for sure but still an A64 at the end of the day which means at MOST 2.8Ghz on air. And pushing it that far would kill the whole point of the lower wattage as you'd probably need to push the voltage up pretty significantly. Just get yourself a Venice if you want to overclock and save yourself a lot of pointless wasted effort.

I always kinda wondered what happened to the s754 DTR hype.

I know you Bar81, were big into testing it out...& i'm gonna assume it bascially was too much work w/o results eh?

Well, when the A64 was still starting out the DTRs and mobiles made sense as they were basically cherry picked cores that would clock higher than the desktop parts and run at lower voltages. I got into the whole scene specifically because of that, max overclock with low voltages=less heat without sacrificing performance allowing me to have a quiet power system. As AMD refined its manufacturing process, every A64 essentially became a "cherry picked" A64 and almost every A64 clocked to the max achievable given the right setup. With the newcastles and especially the Venices/SDs this has become even more true. Thus, given the motherboard incompatabilities, the cooling peculiarities, and general PIA of running DTRs/Mobiles, once the whole advantage of using them was wiped out there really wasn't a point to it outside of those wanting a cool/quiet system and then they would probably be using a Pentium M as opposed to an A64/Turion due to the P-M's vastly superior thermal characteristics as well as its outstanding and usually superior performance even in relation to any A64.

I've been overseas for almost a year and switched to a 3700+ desktop S754 processor before I left as if something went wrong where I am now there was no way I could get a replacement mobile part. I'm coming back to the States end of Summer and from what I've seen the landscape has changed dramatically. In fact, as a low noise enthusiast, I'm looking at the P-M/875P route as my next logical upgrade thanks to its unparalleled thermal characteristics as well as its world beating gaming and office app performance as well as its more than adequate performance in all other areas. That, and the fact that with the Asus CT-479 the P-M platform has now matured such that it is price competitive with any other solution out there as well as being feature rich.

In the end, DTRs/mobiles/Turions had their day but there's no point to them anymore.

That's cool. I remember a friend of mine switched a 754 Barton to a 754 Mobile A64. Didn't work out too well for him (lots of crashing, BSODS, and it was screwing around with his memory)

The difference between the AMD64 Turion and the earlier cherry picked DTR's is that the Turion (the fastest currently at 2.2) is an actual 35watt mobile cpu. THe lower speed Turions also have 25 watt options. So like the Dothan they are low enough wattage to maybe be a real overclocking beast, but the most expensive Turion is around 460 dollars, not to far away from the dualcore entry X2 4200+.

Edit Pentiumguy, see any troll like mushrooms spawning recently? LOL

Haha.... my sig scared them all away 😀. There's still a few out there, but hopefully my sig drove them all away.

^-- to everyone else that doesn't get this. Inside joke 😉

Well, the only Turions that are going to compete with the P-M in terms of heat/power consumption are the 25W and they max out at what 1.8Ghz with 1MB cache? That means you'd have to up your RAM from 200 to nearly 280mhz just to hit 2.5Ghz. Good luck.

754 barton????😕

All I know is that he has a DFI Socket 754 nForce3 board... I thought it was a barton.
Not sure. I haven't payed attention to hardware since a few months ago, so I don't know any of the older stuff. I should ask him 😉.
