A computer at my home (my mom's) has XP home on it. If i install that XP home on a new computer and use that same code, would there be any problems if, lets say, we are both online at the same time? I just dont want to mess anything up or get in trouble with microsoft. THX!

ok, so the only route i could go and still have it legal is buying it huh?

My mom has the oem version, so wouldnt it still be legal if she gave me permission to activate it? I dont want to break the law.

Here is what counts: WinXP Home Edition End-User License Agreement.
1.1 Installation and use. You may install, use, access, display and run one copy of the Software on a single computer, such as a workstation, terminal or other device ("Workstation Computer"). The Software may not be used by more than one processor at any one time on any single Workstation Computer.
It appears very clear that you may not use your mom's license on a second computer.
13. SOFTWARE TRANSFER. Internal. You may move the Software to a different Workstation Computer. After the transfer, you must completely remove the Software from the former Workstation Computer. Transfer to Third Party. The initial user of the Software may make a one-time permanent transfer of this EULA and Software to another end user, provided the initial user retains no copies of the Software. This transfer must include all of the Software (including all component parts, the media and printed materials, any upgrades, this EULA, and, if applicable, the Certificate of Authenticity). The transfer may not be an indirect transfer, such as a consignment. Prior to the transfer, the end user receiving the Software must agree to all the EULA terms.
If your mom is willing to give up her WinXP to you permanently, then this describes the terms under which that can be done.

Yea, it can be activated on a second machine three months after being activated on the original machine.

Although microsoft has no way of knowing, it's a breach of the end user agreement if the original machine is still running XP.

So, in order to be ethical, you need to buy your copy.

If it's OEM, it may or may not work... (Some copies allow multiple installs, others don't)

Actually, you can download a 360-day trial of the 64-bit version if you like... link to it.

ok, i was looking on pricewatch, and i found that i can buy the license only for about $45-50. This is a lot cheaper, and if i use my mom's XP Home cd it should be legal right? Is there a place i can get this cheaper though? Seems like a lot of money...

That's wrong, you do need 1 license per computer it is installed on.

You either have 2 licenses or are in violation of the license.

ok, so i could use a key on a few computers with no problem at all, but to do it legally i need to buy a key.

How about those $50 keys on pricewatch? I know i can get the cd from someone, so how would that be?

The CD is fine. As was stated on another thread (here or elsewhere slips me right now), you are paying for the LICENSE (or product key) - not the DISK. So, in summary of what has been said earlier, you morally/legally/technically only need the license (like you said, $50 or so on Pricewatch).
