I want to put my Cable Modem into a something so it broadcasts more signals. This would allow me to plug in my router & give signal to my router & a desktop pc near by. My question is do I need a switch to do this or can I use a ethernet hub?
With the relatively cheap price on SOHO equipment, you are best served to buy a switch.
However, you will want to put it after the router, not before.
So, your simple diagram would be:
Modem ---> Router ------> Switch
if you put a switch behind the modem, and hook up a router and desktop to said switch you will need more public addresses from your ISP which will most likely cost money.
What would be the easyest route to take would be like jersig said.
Modem>(wan port on router)router>Computers.
If you don't have enough ports then you can take a switch and go Modem>router(with 3 computers-1port to switch)>switch(more computers plugged in)
