Using the AMD retail box fan

A couple places near me always have some of the AMD retail box fans from new systems they build and put other fans on. I am a cheap non overclocking type guy, so I am wondering if these fans are OK to use on cheaper OEM cpus, ala the XP 2400+ Fry's has in a combo with ECS mb for $89?

Part of my question is that the fans are from older boxed cpus, like the XP1700+.

I am surprised the Fry's combo doesn't come with a fan.

Acceptable HS/Fs (acceptable if you are not overclocking) can be had for around $10. Example. AMDs run hot. I wouldn't skimp on a HS/F from a lower model unless I knew for sure that it was the same fan that came with the faster model.

The combo varies, with a slower cpu its the boxed version, with the faster cpu its an oem without a fan.

Nice "example", shipped its $14.10 to me, but can't say its a lot nicer than the AMD retail fan. I guess the only real answer is to try a fan and look at the heat rise.

I have had two different retal AMD cpu's with two different heatsinks, a 2400+ and a 2500+. The manufacturers are different, Ajigo and AVC. You should be able to find a mfr name or logo on the heatsinks and then you can look them up on the web. The newer ones are quite big and they are all designed to satisfy the warranty requirements of the "Processor In Box" for the purchased speed rating. What prices are being offered?
