I like synthetic. I've got Mobil 1 in my 1996 Mazda 626. Prior to hitting 50k miles, my parents would have it brought to the dealership for all of the oil changes where they used that dime a dozen crap oil and it was fine for the first week or so of driving, but every time I neared 1000 miles with the car, it didnt feel as smooth as it did when it first rolled out of the dealership with the fresh oil change.
Of course a number of factors including my hard driving could have produced that result, but I found that Mobil 1 synthetic has REALLY ironed out some of the engine problems I had before. Prior to putting in Mobil 1, I could feel the engine with a rough idle through the floor board, but after mobil 1, everything was smooth again. No vibration through the floor board at red lights.
It was shocking just how much smoother it made the engine. I felt like I had shaved off 30k miles.
Anyways, mobil 1 rules. I used to have trouble starting my car and now it starts with minimal effort after mobil 1. Maybe not like instantaneous when it was new with 5 miles on it, but still better than turning the key for like 5 full seconds until it would start.

I dont know what they put in mobil 1 but it made a believer out of me. I would buy it over and over again in the future for all of my cars. You wont notice it in a new car as much as you would with an older car that YOU have driven for a while and know quite well.

I think the extra smoothness is psychological, I really doubt the engine could start idling smoother due to the synthetic oil. I use Mobil 1 in my old Buick Century 3.3 liter V6, it idles about as rough as it did before I switched over from conventional oil:) The good thing about using synthetic is that I only change the oil every 5500-6000 miles instead of 3200 like I did with regular oil.

For regular use, there is absolutely no advantage to using synthetic oil.

If you have a race car, or tow very heavy loads all the time, synthetic isn't a bad idea.

As far as the "extra protection" goes, it isn't worth it for daily drivers. The extended oil change interval is a myth, for 2 reasons. One is, synthetic costs so much more that even if you go 5-7k miles between changes, it'll cost just as much as two conventional oil changes.
Two, even though the oil itself isn't damaged by extending the oil change intervals, the combustion by-products are still being circulated through the engine.....the filter can't remove them.

Modern conventional oil is so good now that it renders the synthetic advantages moot..........compared to conventional oils from 15-20 years ago.

Don't waste your money.

<< Amsoil v. Mobil 1 thread? >>

That was my tread, but for the for some reason i can't find it in the arcived messages :|

But anyways for the most part, the conclusion was, Mobil 1 and Amsiol are pretty much the best sythetics that you can get. Right now, I'm using Mobil 1 in my 2001 Sunfire w/ 5 speed. I could acually "feel" the difference in the car after I changed for a synthetic. Mobil 1 you can go around 5k to 6k per change. I think I may be changing to Amsoil though, I'm go'in to be starting co op(hopefully) and I'll be putting a crapload more miles on the car, and you can go somewhere up to 25,000 miles per oil change but you have to change your filter after the 12k mark.

In my opinion, if you have a little extra money and really wanna take care of your engine, go for Mobil 1 or Amsoil. The feedback that I got from my thread and talking to 5 or 6 mechanics, go for the Amsoil or Mobil 1. Which one you choose is pretty much personal preference. With the better "feel" that I got from my car, I'm definately not going back.

Thanks buzzman...

The ambulance association I work at, uses amsoil in the ambulances and they change it every 18k they do change the filter every 7k... and I must say they have 4 ambulance with 270,000+ miles on them and several others that are over 200k. and trust me all these ambulances still have a lot of get-up-and-go.. :)

Figuring I'll go with Amsoil and change at least the filter every 5k or so.... just give it a whirl.....

Its not worth changing it after only 5k dude, unless you drive you Indy Car to work ;) I'd change the filters around once every 10k and the oil around every 20k. Those filters are designed and tested to withstand the 12k and 25k changings so you'd be damn safe at 10k and 20k changings. That'll be my plan at least.
