Using spdif out for speaker connection

I'm using a Sony DD/DTS capable amp & speakers for the audio output (via optical spdif out) on this GA-965P-DS4 motherboard.

The issue is that when a system sound happens, there is an initial quieter part to the sound. If theres a constant stream of sound then theres no problem. Its as though the amp is going to sleep as no audio data is coming through.

Is there anything that can be done to fix?

And its not limited to this amp/motherboard - does the same on Epia motherboard I have. Also checked with a different amp and same thing happens.
