"Are there any activities which will be prohibited on the StarBand service?
In consideration for all StarBand Internet users, StarBand reserves the right to limit "bandwidth hog" activities such as audio and video streaming, and automatic file exchange applications (file-sharing). " WOW, THAT AINT COOL, but all in all it seems like a decent price for what you get...

What the hell are you talking about, decent price for what you get?! Are you insane? Cable and DSL would be much better, and about HALF (even less in some cases) the price! Plus the installation fees are half to a quarter of the price!

If I were to get Cable internet, it would cost me 28 Canadian dollars per month. $28CAD per month with a $69,95 one time installation fee. For the month of October it was actually free (installation). Too bad I didn't sign up though. :(

No broadband is available for me (it is nearby though). DSL from VIF Internet costs $28 per month. High Speed Edition from Sympatico, which is 960kbps down and 128kbps up, costs a bit more monthly, but if you factor in the free months they give you, etc, comes down to 1/3 the price in one year (would be more costly if it were for a longer time I think).

Anyway, my point is, generally ADSL/Cable costs $30 and Satellite costs $60! Is there anything better about Satellite? No there isn't! Expensive installation fees, crap restrictions, only 60 hours per month (that's the deal over here), etc. Plus you have to dial up so you can send information out, there's no 2-way Satellite here yet.

So imagine that, paying double the price to get near-cable/dsl downloads, 10x worse ping, and ~2-3KB/s uploads? I don't think that's worth sixty dollars a month (whether it be Canadian or American currency)!

OK enough dialup-user-ranting.

I think you missed the point RSI, satellite is a decent alternative to those who cant get cable/dsl and dont want crappy ISDN.

He said that Cable/DSL are not an option... I am guessing this means he lives in a rural area... Therefore there is no other way to get the speeds that he is obviously looking for if he is willing to pay the money... All I was saying is that when you live in a rural area, it is the only option, and being the only option, it could be priced A LOT higher...

I didn't miss the point at all, I was just making some of my own.

I am in the exact same position. I can not get any kind of DSL service, same goes for Cable. I guess I could get Satellite, but I don't want to! It would suck, badly.

ISDN does suck, though. Grossly overpriced for what you get. Satellite is overpriced as well, but mainly because it's aimed to the people who need an alternative to dialup and can't use ADSL or Cable, or won't for some reason.

It sucks though... Until they start offering 2-way Satellite without all those restrictions and for at least $10 less per month and a cheaper installation fee, etc etc, I won't consider it. ;)

Well the main thing that threw me off was the 60 hours per month thing. That's ludicrous! I use over 150 hours per month on dialup (well, family of 5), how on earth would 60 hours per month be sufficient?

My school got Satellite internet now. They must have cut a special deal with the company in order to get unlimited time and more bandwidth or something, otherwise they'd be in trouble. ;) It does seem better than cable though, which is what they had before. I guess it's better for their situation. They have 30+ computers connected to it.

When they used to have cable, if I tried to download an mp3 or something, it would constantly stop and transfer errors were frequent. Now, the general transfer rate is higher and stays up there instead of stopping and going down.

The ping is horrible on Satellite though. I saw 600-2800ms regularly. When they had cable, I pinged 30-40ms.

And again, no I did not miss the point! :)

I too live in a rural area, & satellite is beginning to look like a pretty good option. The thing you people who slam it for it's ping time need to realize is that we're all used to 56K dial. We can't game on 56K dial, so it's not great loss to us if we can't game on satellite.

The high transfer rates would more than make up for the shoddy ping times.

BTW, StarBand is two-way satellite.

I have a friend who's been beta testing Starband for a while now. He gripes about them taking up 2 PCI slots and 2 IRQs with it. The speeds are pretty decent though. They did give him a new Dell computer for him to keep though.

Two PCI slots & two IRQ's? Damn... I thought it was a USB connection. Even the USB connection sucks, but it's better than losing 1/3rd of my PCI slots. I have enough trouble finding IRQ's for everything as it is.
