finally broke down and ordered the D70 but I heard/read that the .raw files require separate software. i am assuming that the files show up on the CF card but cant be read by mainstream software (correct me if i am if wrong).

are there plug-ins for photoshop that can handle these files? i have PS 6.1 and Elements 2.0 and would rather not spend the $$ on stupid proprietary software just to view one type of image. thanks!

PS7 can read them. At least it's a file type. Can you afford the upgrade to CS?

probably wont upgrade to CS. my copy of photoshop is an educational version from school. i was hoping that there might be a plug-in, even a third party one.

I'm sure your D70 will come with the software to view them, that is pretty standard.

**irfanview is a free software image viewer that will view them.

Photoshop patch

Unfortunately true multi raw support isn't availble unless using Photoshop CS.
This isn't really a problem of photo editing software as it's the proprietary nature of the camera manufacturers.

I haven't tried this patch myself for Photoshop 7, but it should work.

Raw files from camera's is a complicated question. PS 6 in and of it's self can't read raw files from cameras and isn't even a supported product by adobe so don't expect any help from them. Note that raw file support and Camera raw files are 2 different things. A .raw file is a photoshop raw file not a raw file from a camera. Photoshop CS comes with a built in plug in to read many common camera mfg's raw files and as you can see from thier website it's regularly being updated to support new cameras. Upgrade to cs would probably be adobe official response to opening raw files.

Many camera mfgs how ever include thier own plug ins to allow you to open raw files in photoshop. These plug ins are typically very limited and allow little to no control over the importing process or ability to apply an corrections to the raw data. They will allow you to open the files in photoshop and save them as a normal format however. Often times the sold software provides additional functionality.

Originally the camera raw plug in was released by adobe as a purchased add on for photoshop 7 or Photoshop elements 2 and would allow either to read raw files. Adobe how ever stopped selling the camera plug in when they released cs because it was included in that product which unfortunately means it's no longer available for elements 2.

FYI I'm 99% sure that the raw files from your d70 will be .crw files not .raw files as far as the actual file name goes.
