using ps3 to watch videos/movies on flash drive

I was wondering if anyone can give me some tips on how to use my flash drive to watch my shows on my ps3 instead of my old method (convert shows to dvd format and play on a dvd each time)

I just bought a new 8gb flash drive so I'm not interested in streaming or anything.

Basically, can I just move my divx, etc tv shows over on to my flash drive and stick it in the ps3 and watch it? or do I have to convert it to something else?
