using peripherals with laptop

I'm inexperienced at using a laptop. So, I have questions. If I connect a mouse to the PS/2 port on the laptop, can I install software for it? I connected a Logitec wheel mouse and it works but the laptop does not respond to the wheel. I would like to be able to use the wheel to scroll. If I install software for the Logitech mouse, will it conflict with the touchpad-mouse function on the laptop?

I'm also wondering about connecting an external keyboard to the laptop. Apparently, this would have to be a USB keyboard. The laptop has one PS/2 port. Can it be used with either a mouse or a keyboard? [Note: I have no documentation with this computer.] In other words, could I connect a PS/2 mouse and USB keyboard or, vice versa?

What the's purpose of the VGA connector on the laptop? I connected a CRT monitor to it and that worked fine. But, what's the general reason for connecting an external monitor to a laptop? Is it simply to allow someone else to simultaneously view what to view what you see on the laptop screen? Connect a larger monitor? The laptop only supports a resolution up to 1024X768.

Installing the Logitech drivers and having them conflict depends
on the brand of laptop. Dell's touchpad drivers generally will work.
Toshiba usually don't.

There are 'Y' adapters available to allow you to use both a
PS/2 mouse and keyboard at the same time on your laptop.

It not very convienant to be swapping the cables on a laptop.
That is what 'Docking stations and Port Replicators' are made for.

Then the laptop becomes a Desktop replacement.
