Using PCI-e 3.0 video card on a PCI-e 2.0 Motherboard

So will it work and how much performance hit will you typically get.

I forgot which one the customer picked out, but it is an R9 something. The box said PCI-e 3.0 and the CPU and MB only support PCI-e 2.0

Here is the specs:
ASUS M5A97 R2.0 AM3+ AMD 970
AMD FX-6350
all kinds of other unimportant stuff.

I am now running a PCIe 3.0 graphic card (HD7950) on a PCIe 2.0 computer, can't observe any performance hit (by comparing the benchmark on internet).

Unless ure running tri SLI/Xfire, u wont notice any difference. The bandwidth with PCIE 2 was plenty
