using NON-preferred audio devices under W2000 - possible?

I've just moved, belatedly I realise(!) from Win98 to 2000, and notice that I no longer have to disable my onboard sound card to get my Creative Live working. What's more setup implies that my applications (?) could give give me a choice of which device they output to.

Is there in practice, any way to make use of this? I'd like to run a steaminf player via the onboard to speakers and use the Creative for chat in Yahoo but neither Real nor Messenger seem to give me that choice...

I'm guessing they both insist on using the "preferred device"... If so, is there anyway of changing that on an application byapplication basis?

In hope...
